[sblock=OOC]For those of you who want to get in on my own Vignette after this one is finished, just let me know, and I'll work you into the plot. My players are getting antsy, so I'm going to start it up today. Don't worry too much about the group size - I don't really have too much of a problem upping the challenge of my planned encounters.[/sblock]

Round Two (Cont.):

The criminal is taken totally by surprise at the wall of resistance he just slammed into. Completely by instinct, he chops (17) Cludge's neck with his hand, inflicting some pain (4). Cludge backpedals a little, unable to grapple with the man like he planned.

Galwynn uses Cludge's distraction to punch the criminal in the face. He hurts, but it doesn't stop him. A quick glance behind him reveals the crowd parting for the watchman. The criminal continues running. (Open space now, he finishes his turn 5' from Cludge and Galwynn, right next to Rathan.)

Suddenly, in a flash of smoke, one of the famous Orussian Watch Response Teams appears at the other edge of the crowd. The mage, in between four guards, looks confused and frustrated; apparently the dense crowd displaced his teleportation magic.

Saithnar moves next to Rathan and tries again to charm the criminal with his mind. This time, he succeeds. The criminal spins to face Saithnar and shouts, "Friend! Help me, help me escape!"

Saithnar responds...

Phoenix, I assume that applies to the criminal? How many powers does Saithnar have left today?

AGFlynn, that's lethal damage (the criminal has Improved Unarmed Strike).

Wik, Galwynn's unarmed damage is nonlethal, correct?

New Initiative:
Watchman 20
Rathan 13
Cludge 12
Galwynn 11
Criminal 10
Response Team 9
Saithnar 3

"Quick friend, climb up that tree while I make you invisible with my magic! Then they'll never find you!" Saithnar says to the man before waving his hands around in weird ways and mouthing some undecipherable words in the man's direction. Of course, since Saithnar has no such 'magic', the man will be perfectly visible and trapped in the tree for the security forces to extract. "There, it is done. Are you in the tree yet? I can't see where you are anymore."

Cludge Slatefist, Pie escort

Cludge grins at the ruse, then quicky looks around him in mock astonishment.
Where'd he go? Saithnar! He just vanished into thin air!
Rubbing his sore neck ruefully, he steps next to where the criminal "should" be and looks around suspiciously taking care not to make eye contact.
Good riddance! He had quite a punch.

[sblock=Bluff check] Bluff check (1d20+1=14) [/sblock]
[sblock=OOC] Cludge will ready an action to grapple the man again if he moves or appears to disbelieve Saithnar's ruse.[/sblock]

The crowd, catching on, plays along as well. They look around, barely concealing their smiles, asking each other where the man could have possibly gone!

The criminal holds his hands up to his face, confused because he can still see himself. But them he looks at Saithnar, his dear trusted friend, and he smiles, reassured. He quietly climbs up the tree in the front yard of a noble's large house, totally fooled.

The watchman and the Orussian Response Team makes their way through the now orderly crowd. The watchman walks up to Saithnar and says, "Sir, I'm afraid you're going to have to dispel your illusion or we're taking you in instead." The Response Team moves further down the road, spreading and feeling with their hands as though looking for the "invisible" criminal. They sneakily veer towards the tree and surround it, then the watchmage calls, "George Teller! You're caught! Come down this instant!"

Teller looks horrified and confused. How can they see him? The crowd starts pointing and laughing. Teller looks despairingly at Saithnar, betrayed, humiliated, and utterly alone. Slowly, slowly, George Teller climbs down from his hiding place into the waiting arms of the Orussian City Watch. He is manacled and walked back the way he came from, his head low. The crowd jeers at Teller and cheers for the City Watch.

The first watchman turns to the Brigade and says, "You men have done a service to the city today. That man is an assassin, he used his lethal martial arts training to kill noblemen with his bare hands. Vicious. He's a sly one, but you got him. What's this you've got here, a pie? Looks delicious. Mind if I...?" Without waiting for a response, his pointer finger goes for the pie!

OOC: You're all within 5', so anybody can act.

ooc: Yeah, Galwynn was doing non-lethal damage...

When the watch captain goes for the pie, Galwynn slaps him on the back and says "That was quite a capture, captain....? Would you allow a citizen to buy you a drink?" while trying to lead him away from the pie.

The watchman looks longingly at the pie as Galwynn leads him away, but then he warms to the paladin and says, "Oh, I'm not a captain. Just a guard down by the prison. But, good as that pie looks, I'm never one to turn down a drink." He looks around him. "Wait, you're bringing this pie... Oh, OH! This is Edwyd's pie! Is that today? Well, it looks like you've got a delivery to make. Stop by the guard tower some time, I'll take you up on that offer. Good work, sirs, the city thanks you." With that, the guards and Teller leave, heading south on Thunis.

The crowd waits expectantly for the parade to resume. The cohesion of the citizens in spite of all the interruptions is astounding. Maybe this pie really is divine. The Rathan hoists the pie up, Cludge takes the lead, and the Brigade moves the pie down the last leg of its journey. The walk up Thunis is uneventful, and the Edwyd abode is right where Edwyd said it would be. Outside stands a plump, middle-aged woman with fiery red hair wearing an apron. She's attractive by anyone's standards, especially for her age. Her hands are on her hips, but a smile is on her lips. The crowd goes quiet; they grin at Mrs. Edwyd. Even the children stop bouncing around.

"I heard the commotion down the road. Got something for me, boys?"

A smiling Saithnar, satisfied that he has done his part in completing their mission gently elbows his clerical friend in the side to prod him forward. Whispering to Rathan, he says "Remember to make the presentation fancy for her like Edwyd requested, my friend."
