Great point. It's a good way to emphasize to the players the wisdom of thinking of the environment, and of weighing consequences -- as long as one of the possible results is "no encounter."

Yeah, usually it's a list with 20 entries and the first 10 are either "nothing happens" or just flavor stuff like spooky sounds or noticing a cryptic/funny message carved on something. The players know they have about a 50/50 chance of raising hell when they cast Knock or take a rest.
