One of my favorite moments was when the entire party fled a single vampire in Ravenloft. Together, they could have managed that fight. But I had kicked up the atmosphere to 11 as they explored the castle and they were convinced that this wasn't just any old vampire, but The Devil Strahd himself.
Another, when I was just a player, had us fleeing from some sort of black knight/headless horseman foe. Except, we never encountered or even saw this dread enemy. But we were convinced that we wouldn't stand a chance and so we ran, trying to keep ahead of them and find ways to hinder their passage. To this day, the GM will not answer when asked whether there was anything there or not.
