Improved Divine Smite

Basically, that second sentence would've been an unnecessary and confusing attempt at "clarification" if all the feature was supposed to do was add 1d8 to all attacks with melee weapons.

Unfortunately, that second sentence was also more confusing than it had to be with Crawford's official ruling. If "this damage" had instead said "1d8" it would've been clear that it was a two-part feature.

Wait, Crawford said improved divine smite adds +1d8 to your weapon damage and +1d8 to your smite damage???

FYI, everyone, Crawford reversed that initial ruling recently. So it's "back" to being just +1d8 on all hits, no buff to the Smite itself.

Which to be fair is likely the way it should've been ruled all along, and is the way I had ruled it until that first tweet of his. Still, I really wish he was, uh, consistent.

I like this way better, a straight +1d8 rather than +2d8 if smiting. It's how I was going to run it if our paladin made it to level 11.

Yeah. Also don't need to give the camp who wants to nerf the Paladin or nerf Divine Smite any more ammo than they've already imagined up ...
