Yeah, I do rather hope that they keep Sandman sort of out of the DC comics universe. It doesn't really need it to be honest. I know, I know, Constantine but, again, even Constantine wasn't really a major player in a lot of DC universe was he? He mostly did his own thing, showing up from time to time in other books. At least, from my admitted VERY limited DC knowledge, that seems to be the case (a couple of seasons of Legends of Tomorrow aside)
There is more than enough meat on the bone to keep it largely self contained.
I will admit though, the MASSIVE fanbois in me would squee until my head exploded if there was a crossover with Lucifer the TV show and Constantine. Just a one off. That version of Lucifer is obviously not really related in any way to the Sandman Lucifer, and it would be hilarious to see the two characters play off of each other.
