No THAC0

THAC0 didn't appear until 2E, guys. It doesn't work in 1E because the "20" is repeated on the attack table 5 times, and vonly the FIRST 20 can be reached using attack bonuses. The higher 20s require a natural 20 for success.

I knew about the 5 20s, one of my favorite part of the combat matrices, by the way!

I did not know the upper 4 had to be natural though... *overcome by grognard shame, runs off to scour his 1st ed books for that rule* :)

Page 82 DMG!!!! How could I forget!!!!

I believe my ststement to be correct, but confirmation by you would be most excellent. As I recall, it is to be found in a footnote to the combat charts, which is a pretty ludicrous place for it to be.

Its actually in page 82 of the DMG. However, it is optional, interestingly enough... It is for DMs whose sensibilities are offended y the standard system (I kid you not, God bless Gary's prose... let's see if I can reproduce this... (This is a direct quote, the bold portion is for clarity only)

PROGRESSION ON THE COMBAT TABLES
A quick glance at the progression of numbers on the COMBAT TABLES will
reveal that 20 is repeated. This reflects the fact that a 20 indicates a
"perfect" hit. It also incidentally helps to assure that opponents with high
armor class value are not "hit proof" in most cases. Should any DM find
that this system offends his or her sensibilities, the following modification
is suggested: Consider the repeated 20 as a perfectly-aimed attack which
does not gain any benefit from strength or magical properties of any sort
- spell, missile, or weapon. That is, the 20 must be attained by a roll of
natural 20. All bonuses accrue only up to and including a total of 20, so
that even if a character attacked with a bonus for strength of +3 and a +3
magic sword he or she would have to roll a natural 20 in order to score a
hit on any creature normally hit by the second or successive repetitions of
20, i.e. the bonus (+3 in the example) could not exceed a total score of 20
unless an actual 20 is rolled. Thus, the COMBAT TABLES could be amended
to read like this:

21 (natural 20 plus at least + 1 bonus)
20 (natural)
20 (natural)
20 (natural)
20 (natural)
20 (natural)
20 (die result + bonuses to total)
19 (die result + bonuses to total)
This then gives the advantage of allowing creatures to hit and be hit, yet it
denies any undue advantages, as the second and all successive 20s, as
well as all "to hit" scores above 20 require a natural die roll of 20.

Hmmm, I guess that I forgot about the optional part. Anyway, I tend to favor using the optional rule. Any objections? At Level 10, there's actually more of a chance that the rule will actually come into play. Oh, and do any of the other players [howandwhy99, DM_Wannabe, wolfattack, steeldragons, & Mallus] have any objection to beginning play at Level 10?

Ooops, sorry, guys! I got this game confused with another game I'm starting! But, while we're on the subject, do you guys wish to start out at a level higher than first?
