List of official WotC classes?

Which doesn't make sense, considering they are all officially D&D material and WotC should be referring to D&D sources whether or not they're getting money from it. They mention the Dragonlance CS book but not the others?

Right, because the DLCS is published by them, whereas the others are published by MWP. Ditto Paizo's book being published by Paizo. I suppose even Kingdoms of Kalamar could be lumped in here, too...

May as well throw in the original Dungeons and Dragons Warcraft book. I believe there's a few base classes in there.

Additionally, I noticed that the Samurai from OA was omitted, although the CW one is listed.
Good point, but technically (and I'm only saying technically) since the Samurai was updated for 3.5 with the CW version, the OA is redundant. Same with how I didn't bother to have the 3.0e Paladin or Ranger - despite how the classes changed so much in the 3.0 to 3.5 switch.

True. However, since I hardly ever look at NPC classes, I didn't bother to count them here. Besides, I'm sure the OP was likely just looking for PC-playable base classes, not those and NPC classes.

Other then that, how ya doin' man?

Doing well, thanks. :)

I haven't done a side by side analysis of any OA classes vs their Complete X versions, but I had thought they were actually different interpretations on the theme rather than redos/updates, but I see your point.

I wonder if anyone has tried to create this list with all the 'semi-official' materials, such as Oriental Adventures/Rokugan, Kalamar, Dragonlance, etc? I don't have all such material, so I wouldn't have an inkling of all there is.

Here's the same list fixed up a bit, for your perusal:

Archivist (HoH)
Ardent (ComPsi)
Artificer (ECS)

[...etc. etc....]

Wilderness Rogue (UA)
Wizard (PHB)
Wu Jen (ComArc)

71 classes, by my count. Lemme know if I missed anyone ;)
71 base classes? 71?!

Proof positive this game really *has* become bloated beyond all rationality.

And the scary thing is, somewhere out there is a single character with 1 level in at least 40 of them at once. Yikes!

Dude, I wouldn't even call the CW Samurai a class. It sucks beyond anything. The mechanics to it alone are just...blatantly useless and can easly be negated by either an enemy immune to fear or a fighter can emulate half of what the CW Samurai has.

The one in OA is a lot better. Better saving throws, better skill points, better list of skills, bonus feats to customize the samurai's style to your liking, and two weapons you can upgrade and customize yourself that do not count towards your equipment value since they're part of your class abilities.

I'd continue ranting on my points about how horribly designed the CW Samurai is, but that's for another topic. I've never banned anything produced by WotC in my games, but that class is actually banned completely and I've guided players wanting to play a samurai towards the OA version and then towards Master Samurai prestige class if they wanted to develop it differently.

That's good :)

That's an interesting idea, that is. I wonder if anyone has (I feel a new thread brewing!)

How so? In 2e/AD&D, wasn't there just as many kits floating around?

In any case, I am a fan of options, so the fact that there are 71ish+ classes is fine by me.

Also note that certain classes do share a bit of an overlap - indeed, most of the Unearthed Arcana classes are simply one class with some of the abilities of another and they have the highest number of base classes in a single book, at 14 (if my counting is correct). So only a few more than 40 "true" new classes have been developed beyond the PHB and their close cousins in UA.

Given that in 3.5e we have such great gems like the Archivist, the Beguiler, the Dread Necromancer, the Favoured Soul, the Knight, the Marshal and the Scout for new base classes, I have to say I am in favour of this so-called "system bloat" the doomsayers are crying wolf about. My own group has enjoyed most of these classes and I've read testimonies of countless others here on EN World about enjoying they as well.

Hey man,

That's why I said most-specifically "technically" - I'm well aware of many other people holding your view Razz - but my point was to be indifferent to such debates about OA vs CW and just show the most recent version in my list. I always ban Oriental classes in my games anyways, as I view them disrupting to the themes of my games, and that includes the monk, which gets replaced with a pugilist class in its' stead.
