Mental excercise. Converting the d20 system to d6 - entirely-

Have you considered going in the opposite direction? Instead of rolling d6s, you could roll a dice pool of d20s instead, with multiples of skill ranks equaling an additional die.

My current favorite mechanics are based upon this. Your "DC" or "target" is to roll lower than a skill's "controlling attribute" with the amount you succeeded by being a factor. So - say you have 8 ranks in Climb and a 14 Str. You'd roll 3 d20s and pick the lowest roll, with a 14 or lower a success. Someone with between 4-7 ranks would roll 2 d20s. Between 1 and 3 ranks and you roll a single d20. Someone with no skill ranks would roll 2 d20s, but be forced to pick the higher of the two rolls. Each d20 that is a success beyond the first one would add an additional 2 points to your margin of success.

The amount you roll lower adds to your margin of success. So - if you rolled a 9 in the above example, your GM might rule that the margin of success of 5 (i.e. the 14 - 9) would add an additional amount to the distance you climbed in the round.
