Metropolis (The Heart of the City) - Chapter Three

Walking along the dirty unpaved roads of Shieldtown, in amongst the buildings constructed from fragments of ancient tombs plundered and disassembled years ago for building materials, all seems quiet. The home of Jellice, Jovik's contact, is on the edge of the suburb only about ten minutes walk away, an easy stroll through the well-populated area of the suburb where little could go wrong...

Jovik:
[sblock]The streets of Shieldtown are the same as any other slum, just different scenery. And like any other slum Jovik can tell that he is being watched, cased, his possessions judged and weighed against the danger that he represents. But, there is something else about this place, something a little...different. Through casual glances, periferal vision, and keeping generally alert, Jovik watches the streets for danger. In the crowd no-one looks more than a glance, from the windows people are more interested in dropping their filth onto the street, in the stalls the customers and vendors argue in their own world. So who is watching you?[/sblock]

Ba'aktar:
[sblock]This blows. So far all you've got to show for your efforts is a couple of severed giant heads (which though it is pretty impressive still is worth few coin) and a single gold piece. Sheeet. Walking through the slum of Shieldtown you can tell that there is no money here either, bloody peasants. Once you reach the Greenhills though, that sounds like a better prospect. You feel a strange warmth in your pocket and a pressing against your skin, reaching in to check on your strange golden coin, your hand fails to find it. Within your pouch your fingers run over what seems to be a cold, iron, key...[/sblock]

Ru:
[sblock]Shieldtown is a slum, plain and simple. Where there is poverty and decay, the criminal underworld thrives. Ru knows that people in his line of business probably shouldn't trespass on another's turf without proper introductions or warnings, making him a little nervous. His eyes search the crowds in the streets, stare down back-alleys, scan the windows for enemies. There is a flicker in the shadows, just there, and another down that alley. Someone is following him...dwarves...[/sblock]

Taran:
[sblock]During you walk through Shieldtown Stephanie wanders through the group, not saying a word but seeing in generally better spirits. So far you efforts to save this one little girl has taken you places that perhaps you would never see. Stephanie wanders up to Twitchy and pats him, making funny faces at his less-than-adorable features and eventually trying to ride him a couple of times, falling all of them, before laughing, giving up, and walking beside him. Your pocket grows warmer for a moment watching her, and you hand drops into the pouch where your special gold coin rests. On side the picture of the city of Metropolis is unchanged, but now the otherside contains the visage of a beautiful middle-aged woman wearing a crown. For a moment Taran stares at the picture, then looks down at Stephanie...wasn't there a resemblance there, just a little bit?[/sblock]

Ghost:
[sblock]The buildings of Shieldtown contain a powerful list of who's who from Ancient Metropolis. Few people come down this way to study though due to the rumours of a civilization of undeath that dwells within. While Ghost's eyes drift across the names, places, and eventualities of death that the buildings display, a nagging sensation plays at him. Has he been here before? So much of this place seems to lurk in the back of Ghost's mind, like a memory from childhood changed so many times by the subconscious over the years.[/sblock]

Ru does his best to maintain an over nonchalance as he says under his breath to the others, "I'm afraid we've attracted some attention, boys. Dwarven, though I'm unsure whether they're my Killi-kelli-hek 'friends' or not. Be wary."

Now the question is whether these are Killi-kelli-hek, or yet another threat I've yet to encounter he thinks to himself, keeping an eye out and his fists ready.

Taran:
[sblock]Grabbing Stephanie under the arms to lift her onto Twitchy's back, the coin palmed in Taran's hand touches her flesh. There is a warm sensation for a moment, and when Taran's hand is pulled away the coin is gone. In its place on Taran's hand is the impression of Metropolis as shown on one side of the coin, while the other side is no doubt left and impression of sorts beneath Stephanie's clothing.[/sblock]

Ba'aktar's mind wandered. There was indeed some benefit in venturing into the Greenhills. The wealthy residents had nice things, a lot of nice things, and it was likely they would take a little while before they noticed a few small things missing. For a moment his hand went to his pocket, and an expression of puzzlement crossed his painted features. Ru's warning of enemies snapped the half-orc back into the present, and his hand shifted to rest on his weapon.

"Does it matter who they're with?" Ba'aktar asked, "If they're enemies, we kill them. Simple plans are hard to mess up."

"Are you ok Stephanie?" Taran asks, looking a bit concerned for the little girl.

Stephanie looks up at Taran and smiles with a closed mouth, obviously still embarrassed by her tortured condition. She nods her head eagerly and slides off Twitchy again, landing in the mud and giggling a little.

Ru smiles. "True enough, but since we're out to catch the Yellow Robes wih their skirts down, we don't want to ruin the element of surprise by an early show of force if we don't have to, yes? For now, I just wanted everyone aware to keep an eye out. Hopefully, they're simply scouts."

"Here, let me help you." Taran mounds Twitchy with Stephanie, and helps hold her up in the saddle. Togeather, they ride onward towards their desitnation, Taran smiling and encouraging the young one to laugh.

The muddy roads bend through the ramshackle buildings of the suburb, creating a labyrinth-like feel to the place that only Jovik seems to be able to navigate, though soon enough a large building by the side of the road catches your eye. Torsos and legs of long vandalized statues decorate the edges of the old mosque and marble columns flank the entire building, though most of the other decorative pieces have been long plundered. Standing out the from lounging around are six humanoid creatures dressed in funeral garb no doubt plundered from tombs nearby. Their bodies are incredibly hairy and their laugh is an annoying whine, which matched the dog-like heads on their shoulders. It seems that Jellice employs a unique type of person for her endevours, Gnolls...
