D&D 5E Need some help building my first rogue

I would suggest stealth expertise over theives tool. But either is fine.

And at level 6, you can pick up expertise for Charisma skills.

Passive perception is your preception +10.
So yea, expertise applies.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah I think you're right choosing stealth over thieves' tools, I imagine thieves' tools is better at later levels. Just a quick question if I may. I'm putting the final touches on my character, since I am planning on playing a thief archetype at 3 should I be putting points into Int, Char or Wis. I feel as though a +2 mod in wisdom would be helpful when scouting ahead but I'm not sure if I should focus in Int or Char. Any advice for a thief class?

And the thief has nothing special with any stat. So the general way is
Dex first > Wis/Con second > the rest third.

Wis gives perception to spot hidden things and dangers, as well as protection from a lot of minds affecting spells, like fear and charm. Being mind controlled is bad.
Con gives you more HP and will help protect against poisons. Being dead is bad.
Cha is just for talking.
Int is used against illusions and knowing stuff.
Str lets you climb and lift stuff, as well as avoid grabs.

A point or 2 isn't going to make or break anything. It's a 5% or 10% chance. It's still more luck than anything else.

And of coures the most important is what is fun. I give you the math and do analysis, but I can't tell you which option you (and everyone else) would enjoy the most.

Thanks for breaking it down for me in simpler terms. It's hard to break out of the video game mold where stats pretty much govern whether you're going to be effective or not. Decided on going with:
Str: 8
Dex: 16
Con: 12
Int: 14
Wis: 14
Char: 12

I feel as though my character is more of a master thief than a talker, so having a higher intelligence to figure out how traps and specially locked doors work to get into (plus my racial ability pumps intelligence so may as well get what I can from that). Thanks again for the assistance.

As long as i get to be the frog
Rogue is fun and has a lot of options at character creation.

You always get good dex skills as you will max dex asap. Then you really have to decide how you want to approach the other skills. Do you want to be a specialist at anything or average at a lot of things?
