Appearance And Personal Info
Age: 148
Height: 5' 2"
Weight: 115 lbs.
Skin: Pure white (albino)
Hair: Long white (albino)
Eyes: Red (albino)
Physical Appearance: Novhilion possesses typical Elven features, except for his albinism and the hideous scarring dominating the right side of his body, from his head to his waist. The entire area is twisted and emaciated, appearing to be completely dead. His face is most noticeable, with his lips drawn back from his gums, freezing the right side of his face into an eternal skeletal grimace. The left side of his face functions normally, but the right side is unresponsive. His right eye still moves, however. Novhilion's right arm is just as strong as his left, despite the dead appearance of it. Most prefer not to be touched by his gaunt, skeletal, claw-like right hand, which lead him to train until his left hand became his dominant hand. The flesh is still alive, so it doesn't rot, but it's gaunt, drawn appearance warrants him covering most of it with his clothes.
Clothing: Novhilion wears ostentatious black robes, clear signs of his former nobility. The thick robes have platinum worked into the embroidery, with the most notable section of the embroidery being Novhilion's personal insignia displayed over most of the back of the robes. Novhilion has a few small pieces of jewelry (mostly onyx embedded in platinum), but nothing truly remarkable.
Personality: Novhilion does not suffer fools gladly, and can seem a bit pompous at times. However, he is invariably polite (some would even say charming) under most circumstances (assuming, of course, that his appearance is ignored). His fascination with death is unusual, but no more so than the typical interest in Necromancy that many Aereni Elves share.
Family: Father – Durhilion; mother – Nefanwen; both disowned Novhilion.
Equipment Details
Heavy Flail: Novhilion's first heavy flail was issued to him by the Breland military, but he later had one made especially for him. It consists of a spiked chain, connected to an elongated, flanged, octahedral metal head. The flanges on the head have wavy edges and sweep from the base of the head on up. The head tapers to a four-sided wavy spike. The rod of the flail has a similarly wavy design built into the metal.
Composite Longbow: Novhilion designed his bow himself, and then had a master bowmaker assemble it for him. It consists of multiple layers of bone and cartilage from the neck vertebrae of a hydra. He considers it a mild sign of spite for House Phiarlan, considering that it is made from the bones of their heraldic beast.
Spellbook: Novhilion's spellbook is inscribed with his personal arcane mark, which is the same insignia upon his signet ring, along with the cover being embossed with the same mark on the spine of the book. There is also a large magical adamantine lock holding the book shut. In order to open it, Novhilion must touch the book with his right hand, then immediately use his signet ring to unlock the book.
Signet ring: Novhilion always wears his signet ring, which is a platinum ring mounted with a flat piece of onyx. His personal mark, a vaporous sickle with a drop of blood in the curve of the blade, is embossed in the onyx. The ring also doubles as the key for his spellbook.
Background And History
Novhilion was born into the nobility of House Phiarlan, in the port of Pylas Talaer – both of his parents were Dragonmarked, but Novhilion never manifested the mark as his parents did. He received basic training in various arts and forms of combat, but he displayed the most interest in linguistics. He began casual work in the libraries of Aerenal, translating foreign works into the Elven language and vice-versa, occasionally acting as an interpreter for important foreigners. He continued at this for most of his young life, his mastery of the spoken and written word growing constantly.
Later on in his life, he began to take an interest in the arcane arts, due to his examination of several translated books on the subject. He requested training in magic, and was tutored by several of the House's wizards. He displayed a natural aptitude for wizardry, especially in the school of Necromancy. Most of his tutors approved of his preference, seeing it as a way for Novhilion to learn to venerate the powers of life and death upon the world. Things went well for Novhilion, until his interests turned to darker arts.
During his translations, Novhilion stumbled upon several foreign books of spells, a few of them containing basic Necromantic magic. However, these spells did not utilize the positive energy that his mentors had used – these incantations drew their strength from a darker, more sinister force. Novhilion devoted his time to mastering this new kind of magic, astounded at the power of the negative energy that he wielded. His elder wizards had warned him against such types of magic, however, so he kept his studies from his mentors. His knowledge of the dark arts slowly grew, until the catastrophe that occurred during his one hundred and thirtieth year.
Novhilion had recently discovered a large, ancient spellbook, originally owned by one of the members of House Vol. Amazed that the book had somehow evaded destruction, Novhilion began to eagerly study the magic within. He pored over it for weeks, until he came across what appeared to be a relatively simple spell. He snuck out in the middle of the night to experiment with this newfound knowledge, and under the cover of darkness, he readied his mind for the casting, held out his right hand, and uttered black words that had not been spoken for ages.
His hand was immediately immolated in a black fire, negative energy coursing down his arm. The pain was intolerable, and Novhilion fell to the ground, thrashing and screaming in agony. With his last conscious thought, he wrested the spell from his mind and focused all of his efforts into ending the pain. The magic immediately dissipated, and Novhilion passed into darkness.
When he awoke, about a week later, things happened swiftly. His body had been horribly deformed by his exposure to the rampant energy. In addition, Novhilion had lost all pigment in his body from the shock of the experience. His formerly blue eyes turned blood red, and his jet-black hair had turned snow white. His fair skin lost all traces of color, and Novhilion looked as he had become – a ghost of his former self. Despite the best efforts of multiple healers, he remained scarred, undoubtedly for the rest of his life. To make matters worse, his elders had found out about his dabbling in the dark arts, and Novhilion knew punishment would be harsh.
About a month later, after a quick assessment of the situation, Novhilion was sentenced to be excoriated immediately for his dangerous magical practices, but after Novhilion pleaded that he experimented with no ill intent, the sentence was lessened to a simple cut with House Phiarlan. Novhilion was still permitted to stay in Aerenal, and he was permitted to be in contact with members of House Phiarlan, but he could no longer directly associate his name with the House's. However, the general feeling of ill will towards Novhilion, along with his parents immediately disowning him out of shame, caused him to gather his belongings set sail for better lands. Cut off from all aspects of his former life, Novhilion took the name Wraithblood upon himself, as a reminder of his shattered life and tainted present.
Novhilion traveled for a few years, finding and binding himself to his new companion, the raven Caron, along the way, until he arrived in Breland. He almost immediately joined the military, forsaking his people's typical xenophobia, seeing the battlefield as an opportunity for him to test out his magic without disapproving eyes criticizing his actions. He volunteered and was instated into the Sixth Breland Infantry, serving as magical support and tactician for the unit. He enjoyed a reasonably successful combat record, employing excellent tactics and making good use of his destructive magics for both battle and espionage. However, towards the end of the war, his actions came under scrutiny. Some of his methods and tactics were considered dangerous and amoral, and Novhilion was suspected (but not accused) of brutality towards prisoners of war. Novhilion defended his actions, claiming that he only made sacrifices for the greater good. He was warned to cease such actions, and a close eye was kept on him. Fortunately, the war ended before he could get himself into any more trouble.
Several months later, Novhilion settled down in Sharn, buying himself a small house in Cliffside, earning money as a translator and interpreter for newcomers, along with providing occasional spellcasting services, and running an under-the-counter poison shop. He manages to create an acceptable existence for himself in Sharn, studying most of the time, working for most of the rest, but occasionally mingling and enjoying himself with members of the high life he once knew. It is difficult for one such as Novhilion to be considered "happy", but he is doing as well as someone in his position can be doing. But, if he were to be given the opportunity to prove his power and his worth, he would be prepared to uproot his quiet existence immediately...[/sblock]
