My group is stuck with a good name for a core class with strong fighting and arcane spell casting abilities. ( Imagine this to be some kind of Hex-Blade that can belong to all alignments )

The fact that neither your group nor all the RPG publishers are able to come up with a single good & simple name is just because there is no such character who is both as strong as a fighter and a wizard. Hence the hundreds of names which are just a mix of two words... that's what such a character will always be: a mix. And "mix" doesn't make for a good class name either

I have the sudden urge to create rules for the 'Mix'.

BTW: The trouble with 'spellsword' is that it is a silly name if the character uses
a flail.

Final Fantasy always called that character type a "Mystic Knight" for what it's worth.

Me, I'd modify their spellcasting ability along the same lines as the Gun Mage from Iron Kingdoms and call them a Channeler, as in the "channel magic through steel."
