I was at work in Manhattan when the power went out. Everybody was kind of freaking out ala 9/11. Especially when word came that the blackout extended to Detroit and Canada.
Went home to my apartment in Spanish Harlem. Traffic lights were all out. Random people took it upon themselves to direct traffic at major intersections.
Got home. Huddled with some friends around a battery powered radio. Drank on the rooftop. (Think it's the first time I could actually see the stars over the city.) Sirens all night. Crashed sometime around 2.
No power this morning. Went to work, cause I heard they had power on the west side. 4 people showed up. Left. Drank more. Came back home again.
Still no power. Played Stratego. Lost repeatedly. Eventually, around 6 pm, I heard wild cheering from the streets, and sure enough every clock in the apartment is flashing 12:00.
I think there are still places without power. Overall, everyone's been mad chill. New Yorkers have come along way since the looting, etc. back in '77.
