Paladins and Smite Evil

First of all... is Smite Evil a standardaction? (probably Not)

2nd.. How many Smite attacks/attempt can one make in a round?

In 3.0 it wasn't really a problem cause of the low number of daily uses... but in 3.5 they've got more than enought.

sure it isn't a problem on the low levels.. but on higher levels Normal Characters have a much Higher chance to meet something Evil... as it mostly involves into good vs evil campaigns...

And should they hit level +20 It jsut all wrong...

Imagine soem level 24 Paladin with his +5 Holy Keen GreatSword udner the Haste Effect...
5 attacks each dealing like 4d6 + 15(amusing a "high" strenght? + 48(2x level cause of greater smiting)

["He wont hit every time"] Well thats the problem... he gets his charisma to Hit (i think)
think of a paladin starting with 16 cha, + 6(for level 4,8,12,16,20,24 ability increase) + 6 (item of Cha + 6) thats like a + 9 bonus to hit on all those 5 attacks... and the extra damage is Fixed.. its not liek the rogues 1 to 6 damage per die... no its one per level (x2 with greater smiting)

A level 10 or 12 paladin will be able to slay a Balor in like 1 turn...

It's free. You just decide for each attack, whether it uses up one of your daily smite attempts. That certainly works more than once in a round, given that you have enough daily uses.

a paladin may attempt to smite evil with one normal melee attack. (so any time you attack)

It depends on the smiter's class, abilities, and feats. A standard paladin is once per day, increasing by one attack every 5 levels thereafter, 5/day at lvl 20.

No.

=min(smites remaining today, attacks in round) ;)

Sorry, I don't understand what this sentance is meant to say.

So your point is epic level warrior types can really dish the damage if you caught in melee with them? And in other news, water is wet! :)

A level 10 or 12 paladin will be able to slay a Balor in like 1 turn...
Or not.

"Should they hit level +20 its jsut wrong" as in once they get greater than level 20.. their Smite is just So overpowered...

well the paladin gets feats too.. he has the weapons too and the attacks... he really can deal more damage than the normal fighter

Smite evil is good but if you use it on every attack druing a round you're likely to blow all of it's uses for the day. Seems to me that it's fair you should be able to kick alot of butt doing so.

Just to elaborate a little, a Balor has 290 hp. A 12th level paladin has three attacks per round. Even if they miraculously all manage to hit the balor's 35 armour class, they still have to average a smidgeon 96 damage per hit.

Plus of course, unless your weapon is cold iron, you can add another 15 to that.

I was mostly thinking of the 3.0 Balor (its CR 18)
but oh well.. as 3.5 balor is CR 20 then lets take a level 12-14 Paladin (1-2 ekstra smiting feats) a good sword.. (boots granting haste 10 rounds a day) and maybe 2 rounds...

No he doesn't, apart from the standard 1 per 3 HD that everything with an Int score gets.

A few times a day, maybe.

A 12th level paladin adds +12 two his damage against evil creatures upto 3 times per day. A 12th level fighter can get GWS, for +4 to damage every time he hits. If he hits more than 9 times in a day, he's in the black... :D

If the balor is foolishly standing in front of the said paladin without using any of it's special abilities (even it's fly speed and reach), and the said paladin is very lucky and makes success in all of his melee attacks, and he doesn't die before making those attacks, then maybe .... occasionally ...... perhaps.
