The Captain looks down at his feet and then back up at the group before answering. "Darque is in a cell because he was being a troublemaker. Talking about escape and such just like you are starting to do already. It's not fair to get people's hopes up like that though. Not to mention how his plan involved us supposedly escaping through the Monster Portal instead of the nearer one which you came through. Just to get near the other portal would mean a full scale attack of their compound to gain access. There wouldn't be anybody left alive to escape after that!" Niko snaps at Periwinkle before turning to answer Peladus.

"We create the undead with the crystal. It makes it's own materials actually. Which is why we have enough left over to use for building materials and such. It sucks a little bit of life out of you, and a skeleton forms beside the crystal. And if you are wearing the crystal crown, you can give orders to the undead which it will obey. Without the crown, they are just mindless and will attack whoever is nearest. Darque snuck over and used the crown and crystal to make a skeleton which ran off through the portal. Probably the one he stuck his message to you in. That was when his freedom ended and we locked him up. As for the portal itself, nobody here knows anything about it more than you. Darque claims to have some knowledge, but his ideas are impossible. As for what right I have to decide what to do with you... Well, I'm the law here. And you are stuck here now. Your options are to live here in Haven, obey the laws, and survive along with everyone else, or leave. So yes, you could fight us and cost us several good men. But then you'd not ever be welcome here again. You think the orcs and goblins will take you in? There is no sunlight here. Just endless darkness in the tunnels and only Haven and the monsters camp for shelter near the two portals." Peladus does not sense any deception from the Captain. Sense Motive (1d20+0=12)

"I'll let you speak with Darque, but he's not being set free for now. And I need you to leave your weapons here. They will be stored in the armory with the rest and returned to you anytime you should wish to leave. You can hold onto your armor for now if it makes you feel better, but we won't attack you unless you give us good reason. If you obey the rules, you can live in safety and peace here for as long as you'd like. At least until the next wave of monster attacks. Then you can help defend what little we have here like everyone else." the Captain finishes. If there are no further questions, and if everyone leaves their physical weapons behind (he can't know about Xir's blade yet, but the staff you've brought would have to stay), then the Captain escorts the party to the cells where Darque is being held. It is fairly big for a cell, and the guard opens the door for the party to enter. "Don't worry, you aren't going to be confined here unless you start breaking the rules as well. You will be let out when you are done speaking with him."

"Well, aren't you just Mister Frowny-pants today," scolds Periwinkle. "What you need is a puppy. Here, Snoofles, come cheer up this poor, sad man. I think he needs you more than I do. Don't worry, we'll beat all these monsters for you. It's dramatic necessity. I know all about it. Barry Lakeward uses it to get out of impossible scrapes all the time. We'll just pop on in and talk to Mister Darque, while you play with Snoofles, and then we'll put things right, and then we'll have tea."

ooc: please don't lock us up, mister DM sir!

The foul little halflings looks more and more mutinous as the Captain continue to speak. Using the table for cover Dair attempts to hide his sling a single dagger and a pouch of bullets inside his codpiece, and in his boot, etc., while the small potion of him visible above the table remains perfectly still - besides the increasingly pronounced scowl. He is also thankful his thieves tools are already concealed and figures that his five remaining daggers will likely satisfy the guards.

"Tried talkin' with the "monsters"?" He asks, "Surely they want out to?"

[sblock=Hide 26, Sleight of Hand 12, 11, 22 ]Hide, Sleight of Hand (1d20+13=26, 1d20+5=12) I rolled for the thieves tools, even though he would already have had them secreted, since I had not declared that. Let me know if I need to make another hide check for them. After these events I will have h0 on a Sleight of Hand for them. Sleight of Hand (1d20+5=11) Sleight of Hand Dagger (1d20+9=22) [/sblock]

Snoofles licks Periwinkle once and wags its tail before trotting over to sit beside the Captain who looks down at the dog with annoyance.

OOC @Boddynock: The stone could be removed Peladus thinks, but not casually or quietly enough to do it without notice here.

OOC @Halford: Dair secretes the dagger, the sling, the slingstones, and his thieves tools in his codpiece without comment or appearent notice. Now he appears to be nothing more than a harmless, disarmed, well endowed halfling.

Btw, who is Dair modeled after, Belkar? ;)

[sblock=Belkar] Not conciously, I just decided to really play up his low charisma. I am a big fan of order of the stick though and now that you mention it... I still chuckle whenever I think of the sexy shoeless god of war comment.

Well endowed halfling' lol. Are those sling stones or are you just, um, very, very ill? :-S

Poor Therkla :.-(![/sblock]

"Is the mutt yours?" Dair asks, hope ringing in his voice.

"Nope, not mine. Never seen such an animal before. You say its called a 'mutt'? Seems harmless enough I guess. As for talking to the monsters, you can try that if you like next time they are charging the defenses and screaming for our blood." the Captain responds as the door to the cell is closed behind you.

The man inside stands and turns to see your group. Stepping forward into the light you see a human man of some 60 years age. His robes are dirty and patched while his white hair and beard are somewhat disheveled. A look of hope rises in his eyes like the morning tide coming in. "Are you the ones?" he asks with concern. "Did Verminar send you??" he asks more urgently.

One guard stays outside the cell a little ways away, but the Captain leaves until you are done talking with Allahastor.

[sblock=Belkar]So, is it Xir or Kona'i that is your Roy? The influence that holds Dair back from becoming several kilonazi's worth of evil? ;)[/sblock]

"Yes and yes. Make with the explicating old man. How do we get out, who do I need to castrate, and what does this staff we brought you do?" Snaps Dair marching forward and pointing an accusing finger at the old wizard.

"Seems to me like we've been drafted for a whole heap of trouble we did not sign up for. I shall expect to be payed extra."

[sblock=Belkar]I guess we'll have to see! Although I think Periwinkle is our closest Elan analogue.[/sblock]

"Well of course it's us, silly. Who else would Verminar send? He is the cutest little thing, isn't he? With the little purple wingies and that fat little belly. It's ever so nice to meet you at last. And we're sorry for the mess in your basement. Dair will clean it up when we get back, won't you, Dair? Now, tell us all about what's happening here, and what that staff is, and how you met Vermy." Periwinkle holds still with an effort, focusing her blue eyes on the old man.

ooc: Dair's Roy is Periwinkle, of course. ;)
