pitch me a characer build

So I found out that my DM no longer allows Book of Nine Swords, so all of my 4 backup characters have been shot down.
We have a swordsage (my current character) and a warblade now, but when they die, they can't come back, and no new characters with martial adept classes can be used.

What I need is something that can keep up with the casters and the warblade, because my swordsage is going to bite it soon, we rolled for stats and I got hosed.

We also can't use any classes with 'works all day' abilities, like warlock and dragon shaman, and I don't really want to be a stands-behind-the-meat-shield caster.
I like being in the front line.

Any suggestions?

First of all, what kind of stats did you get?

Second, there is a 5 level PrCl from FR: Unapproachable East called the Shou Disciple that is essentially an armored monk (Lt only, as I recall) who can FoB with any weapon (eventually). It has no Monk prereq, but does stack with it.

Build a warrior with this in mind. Personally, I'd go PsyWar/Soulknife/Shou Disciple. But I'm weird like that.

guess I forgot to mention:

3.5, no psionics, no fractional BAB or saves. no FR (half the game has been in a homebrew world and half in Greyhawk), Healing Belt requires a turn attempt to use.

haven't rolled any stats yet, which makes things harder. i can't get him to use point buy.

Everything so far has had higher than average armor class, so as close to full BAB as possible or good buffs would help.

no LA races, they're a death sentence in this game, since he won't allow any good ones. but the sucky ones are available :uhoh:

the traps in this game are getting more and more cheesy. :erm:
so are the monsters, come to think of it.

oh, and no summoning specialists, too many players at the table for that.

How much is the character level? And what kind of characters are in the party?

If you want to be in melee range and still do something more complex than swinging a sword, Duskblade in PHB II is a very fun class to play. At lower levels, it is somewhat better as a second-line fighter/supporting caster. But after 7th level or so, you can be a true front-line fighter mage.

Define "works all day"?
Does the Monks AC bonus count (it works all day), the Druids' immunity to poisons or do you mean activated stuff like Eldritch blast (also any of the Reserve feat), Breath weapons like Dragon Shaman, or Warlocks invocations?

So restrictions as I see them:
No Psionics, No Tome of Battle, No Warlock, Dragon Adept, Dragon Shaman, No major Summoners (So non-summoning Druid would work), No LA, Turning belt is now Divine turning only,

By no Psionics, does that mean no Psionic classes or nothing from both books (Expanded Psionics handbook ands the Complete book)?
There are general feats in them.

Other than a Caster; there is little that keeps up with them unless there are alot of house rules favoring non-casters dudes (or he allows Tome of Battle).

Is this low or high level play?
A Gish using Wu Jen could work. Giant Size is a great scroll (which can be used by you at any level) for melee combat that isn't too expensive by mid level.

Maybe something like Fighter/Wu Jen/Prc (I like the one on
WotC Website Swift Blade).

You could play Gaara (that was one of my character): Bard 10/Sublime Chord 10.
Snowflake Dance (Cha bonus or +11 hit which was my Cha bonus by expending 1 Bardic Music) along with other buffs made him decent in melee.
Scrolls of Extended Wraithstrike help if really need to hit enemy.

He only has +12 BAB, but with his gear and +2 weapon he was +22, add some buffs and he could be higher (I recommond buffing against non-wraithstriked foes).
He could fight in melee (usually Shapechanged into a good form like Pit Fiend or a Solar or Ancient Red Dragon) decent with his Kusari-gama.
He can also blast foes if neccesary: Desert Coffin (Bigby's Grasping hand), Desert Funeral (Grasping hand + disintegrate, or Horrid Wilting)

There was also Rock Lee (I liked that show for a while):
Monk 9/Wizard 5/Rogue 1/SwiftBlade 5.
Wraithstrike again helped alot. As did Abrupt Jaunt when attacked. I'll admit, the Exp penalty sucked but I really wanted a Rogue level for UMD checks.

Ok...

Human Ftr., emphasize Dex then Str, and use a polearm.

Example:
Lvl 1) XWP: Greatspear, Combat Reflexes, Hold the Line.
Lvl 2) Stand Still
Lvl 3) WFoc: Greatspear (or Longspear, as per CompAdv rules)
Lvl 4) WSpec: Greatspear (or Longspear, as per CompAdv rules)
Lvl 5)
Lvl 6) Deft Opportunist, Short Haft- or alternatively, use Armor Spikes for close in work, and take Power Att.

From there, you have options. Continue the Power Att feat tree. Take Aberration Blood and Inhuman Reach to increase reach (Heroes of Horror). Take Monkey Grip to increase base damage. There are lots of Feats that work with Polearms

You could even save a Feat on XWP and use one of the perfectly fine PHB Martial polearms.

Find a way to have access to Enlarge at will, boosting base damage and reach. OTOH, if you go with an edged polearm- the Polaxe, Guisarme, Glaive, etc.- you can use that with Whirling Blade. The easiest way to gain the access is via an ally, multiclassing or potions.

If your PC is Lawful, you can aim for the Kensai PrCl- you'll need Combat Expertise and certain skills, but in return you'll get an improving magic weapon and a class power that adds +8Str (which is untyped so it stacks with anything) for a few rounds.
