It's a lot better from their standpoint to sell us fish tacos every quarter than to help us fish for ourselves.
That only works if the masses genuinely enjoy the fast-food/food truck dishes they are offering. In this case, nostalgia is appropriate as the lore of AD&D and 2E hugely outclasses what they are doing today. I want a five-course meal, not roach coach grab 'n' go mediocrity.

Unfortunately, it appears that fast food is what most people want. All we can hope is that they release the recipe.

Ideally, WotC wants D&D to be Legos. You buy a Lego set and they give you instructions on how to build the thing on the box, but they don't care if you use the parts to build something else. They're just not giving you extra pieces or instructions on how to do anything but what is on the box. Further, they aren't really in the market to sell you the big tub of blocks anymore; they make a lot more money selling you Avengers HQ or the Millennium Falcon.
Clearly you haven't been to a Lego store. We take our son periodically to one so he can pick out a variety of bricks. :)

I cannot stand the great wheel. It’s so boring and useless for gaming. Here’s a plane made entirely of one element, you will die in a few rounds without this one exact spell or magic item, go have fun and explore. So dull. The Elemental Chaos was much better presented, made sense, and was itself a cool place to adventure.
You aren't complaining about the Great Wheel there, though. You're complaining about single element planes, which can occur with or without a wheel cosmology.

It's pretty easy to have both the Great Wheel AND the Elemental Chaos if you wanted them. The outer planes could be viewed as being in the wheel shape, and the inner planes could be meshed into the elemental chaos.

It's important to remember that none of these cosmologies actually represent the real shape of the multiverse. They are just how individual worlds imagine them to be. The sages of one world envision the outer planes as a circle, and the sages of another as branches of a world tree.

I like the elemental limbo because there the dragons could create a cluster of demiplanes with the name "Io's blood islands", the setting of "Councyl of Wyrms". And it is not so dangerous for low-level PCs if you want adventures with elemental monsters, and genies.

Other idea is there is a third echo plane, the "spirit realm", next to the plane of mirrors. This was in the origin the fate of the souls and spirits who didn't go to the outer planes. This place was like a mixture of hippy comune and failed state in the afterlife, but later several groups of giants from noble houses created their own domains. (Don't ask, but they were in the loser faction in the war bettween gods and primal titans).
