POLL: What specialist are you

Transmuters own :) No other type has a larger bag of tricks up there sleeve and they can actually affect there surroundings instead of just pretending to (illusionist).

I always favoured Fire Elementalists - so I'd probably go for the Ember Mage. I love Alienists as well....
And I do miss those Dimensionalists.

I've run transmuters, evokers, and an illusionist/thief from 2e as PCs. As a NPCs, I think I've used pretty much every specialist except maybe a conjurer.

But as I think part of the fun of being a wizard is blowing stuff up, I like evokers...

i prefer the Generalist, Elric-like Necromancer, Evoker, gnomish Illusionist/Thief, or the female elven (dark) Enchantress - not necessarilly in that order.

granted the Transmuter would be more usefull overall cause i always memorize those anyways.

but Evoker rules. *BOOM*

I have two:

Human Abjurer (prohibited: Evocation) - This guy started with a level of wizard and a level of rogue to augment switching to monk. It allows him to get a super high AC and flip around the battlefield getting low powered sneak attacks and giving friends a flanking bonus.

Gnome illusionist: (prohibited: Evocation) - Pretty straightforward. As you can see I don't really care much about straight-up power.

Abjurer over Evoker

I also tend to go for the generalist wizard, but if I had to specialize because of the flavor or needs of a campaign, I'd pick Abjurer over Evoker any day.

Look at it this way. You can be a specialist in anything (Wizard by school, not PClasses and stuff) and get a bonus spell per level. The bonus spell has to be a school that you want to cast alot. Granted, Evoker and Transmuter are the 'high end', but you have to give up so many schools to get them. Take Abjurer - it's cheap. Use the bonus spell for an Abjuration and simply make sure you use one slot of each level for an Evocation and you'll feel like and Evoker (or same for Transmuter).

Why take Abjuration over some other 'cheaper' school? Look at Abjurer this way - you never want to be without them: Minor Globe/Globe, Dispel Magic/Greater Dispel, the list goes on. Really there are not many 'crappy' abjurations (unlike Necro and Div, or even Illusion if the campaign does not fit that style).

It's tough for me to choose just one, but my favorite three are conjurers, enchanters and illusionists. I find them much more appealing to play. since necromancers and evokers are cliche and somewhat boring (no matter how big your fireball gets)
