Race search please help

Ok here's what I'm looking for. A race that is low on the level adjustment, and has something not so nice about them. I was going to use the werewolf template but at LA+5 it's just too costly. I think I want a guy that can pass himself off as human but isn't. I think he has fast healing (not high, I was thinking like 2). If you know of a race/monster whatever that does this please share. If not, do you think fast healing could be added to an existing race? What LA would it take to make it balanced? I was thinking that if it could be added to a race then I might use the half-doppleganger (from dragon #313, already a LA+2)with this added on maybe increasing its LA by +1. I might even remove some stuff from them to try and balance it out at the +2 LA if possible.... What do you guys think? I need this for a major recurring NPC in my upcoming campaign and I need to make him balanced as he may join the party on occasion....

Thanks

Well, you might go with that half-doppelganger with FH added idea, or you might go with a hengeyokai from Oriental Adventures (raccoon dog, weasel, and badger hengeyokai tend towards evil alignment IIRC) and tack on Fast Healing 2 along with boosting the total Level Adjustment/ECL to +2. Hengeyokai normally have a +1 LA/ECL, are shapechangers in type (in 3.5 you'd probably have to make them humanoids with the shapechanger subtype, IIRC; I think there's an issue of Dragon that has some conversion notes for Oriental Adventures to 3.5), and can shift between a human form, a particular animal form (i.e. badger hengeyokai turn into common badgers when in animal form), and a hybrid form. They have low-light vision in their non-human forms, and can speak with other animals of the same general type when in those forms.

Shadar-kai from the Fiend Folio might work, since they look human aside from gray skin and dark eyes (which can be concealed easily enough anyway), but they have 3 racial hit dice and a +1 Level Adjustment.

NPC's can break some rules..

But if your inital thought was Were, but the high LA causes issues, take a look at Sean Reynolds Savage Progressions you can break the LA down to more comforatable chunks.

Another option would be to go the Eberron Shifter route with Shifter Healing...

Or Sean Reynolds Curse of the Moon book...

The only danger is having a player wanting thier next character to be the same race, with the same benefits :)

Lastly, perhaps as add a Bloodline and adding a Major listing to the Troll :)

Lots of stuff you could do :)
