Rays & Precise Shot

Do you need precise shot to shoot a touch attack spell into melee? Or since it's not a physical weapon the minus to hit doesn't take effect?

It operates like a weapon. Precise shot is a good feat if you work with a lot of rays.

I'm designing a ray/orb "specialist" myself, so I know where you're going.

Don't forget that Precise Shot has a prerequisite- Point Blank Shot.

Don't go too far down that feat chain, though- you'll get more milage out of Feats like Empower spell than the rest of the ranged combat feats, or even Weapon Focus (ranged touch attacks).

Your PC probably should equip himself with some kind of range weapon just to make sure he's not wasting spells when he could be flinging sling-stones or "grenades" for greater effect.

Danny - why not just go whole hog Warmage, if you want a ray/orb specialist.

Sure, you sacrifice utility, but you deal ungodly damage, they have some neat abilities, and with the PHB2 replacement abilities, you can get some of the really nifty non-evokation spells to round out your WM, since there really aren't any super good evocation spells that they don't already have.

With the right feats, you can really blast out some amazing and utilitarian damage across the board.

Partly because of the people I play with- so far, nobody has allowed a base class outside of the PHB.

Partly because the PC concept is so centered around Rays & Orbs to the point the PC's name is *groan* Ray Orbusson. :) There are several out there that simply aren't on the Warlock's list.

Partly because there are some tropes on the PC I'm considering that may demand certain class combos- perhaps cleric, perhaps PsyWar or Soulknife if allowed. One thing I'm considering is the Feat that lets you make a touch spell into a ray spell- allowing the PC to do things like cast Heal spells (if he has cleric levels) at a range.

Precise shot and pointblank shot seem to be favorite among spellcasters in our group. they work all the way upto 20th level and yes frank the dm is right.

It's the best thing if the PC can afford to get a good Dex after picking high casting attribute plus Con.

Even without dex, it avoids the -4 penalty firing into melee which with the poor BA that a wizard has.
