If I had to rewrite the paladin class, I would go back to its origins in the King Arthur and Charlemagne stories. While they were religious, they were not part of the church. They would be Paragons of Knighthood and landed nobility, and if I had my way, those would include the Green Knight and the Black Knights that we find in literature. My Paladin class would be have to be at least Lawful( codes of knighthood and all that).
The Paladin would be to the Fighter, like the Assassin would be to the Thief, and the Illusionist to the Wizard. Like how they did it in 1E.
