Well, you could prolly substitute a music example here. If a music teacher bought the music of a song that still has copy right to be played on the radio and used it to teach someone to play the piano, there is no problem. The buying of the official music book takes care of paying for the royalties. Using the music (or 'rules' in D&D) is not copyrightable. Now, if you were to make photo copies of the rules to hand out during play, there would prolly be a legal issue...
