The Mind Squatter - A Playful Scifi Fairytale RPG Zine.jpg

The Mind Squatter - A Playful Scifi Fairytale RPG Zine from Universe Ball Anthology
  • END DATE: Sat, May 20 2023 12:34 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): An original system
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $20 + S/H for the PDF and print version of the core rulebook plus additional PDFs
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Before we get into this RPG, the set up is odd and dark. It’s not bad and I don’t want to present it as something that isn’t cool, this game as a lot of potential. But you have to buy into the premise. If you take it literally without seeing its inspiration from Over The Garden Wall, Rugrats, Stranger Things, and Scooby-Doo, you might see this as more "darkly criminal" than "whimsical weird." That disclaimed, you’re one of several 8-year-old siblings who lived your entire lives locked in your bedroom. Your father stole your video game system and now you have to breakout and search the manor for your stolen entertainment system. The eight years locked in a room are used as a premise for a fairy tale and less like the set up for a horror RPG. 175 pages and rules-lite, this is a game of exploration through the manor that is your prison in search of the one thing that is your joy. Along the way, your young characters will learn about themselves and this world. If the idea of a whimsical world where you’re searching for your video game console interests you, check out the campaign page.

Set in a subterranean city administered by a computer with a glitchy digital sun. 145 pages of fighting against an artificial intelligence dedicated to running your life. If you and your players are ready for a brutal RPG about the importance of human determination, NEUROCITY awaits.

While I totally understand that project creators want to have control of the visual presentation, I'm a bit over them placing all the text inside images. Makes it even more difficult to find projects because the text isn't searchable.
I agree, it's difficult in many ways. There are visual and audio reader challenges when the text is embedded in the artwork. Mobile phones don't always support the artwork dimensions. If you need to copy/paste the text (as I do for some elements of my reporting), it's less fun. So, yes, I agree.

Publishers who use WotC's D&D 5E trade dress get an automatic pass from me. Pretty sure the OGL and WotC's fan policies don't allow for that, and it's lazy to boot.

Yeah, I know, don't judge a book by its cover . . . but if you can't put forth the effort to come up with your own trade dress and cover, it doesn't instill confidence that your material is any good either.

I wish there were more products like Secrets of Greenwold: you get everything you need* for the adventure in one product. Love it.

*I know you don't technically need all these items, but I hope I don't have to explain myself to get my point across.

Plus doing that on Kickstarter rather than DMs Guild, especially with a tagline like that, is really asking for a nastygram from WotC.

Me too, and I'd take it even further and say it would be cool to have adventures that have everything you need including the rules, so you'd literally only need one book to play.
