I'm really leaning towards option #3, and that is kind of the "Sect" I was referring to. I'm guessing The Catholic church may be the way to go. I'm sure the church has their own secrets to keep, and since he is using his powers in the "name of god" perhaps his sins shall be absolved. Either that of the Church dosen't know he has these powers, or they know and look the other way because of his success rate. Either way instead of excorcism or Satanism research, I was thinking about Relic hunter/protector. The psychometry would certainly come in useful here.
The other options is that perhaps the Cathars weren't completely wiped out in the Albigensian Crusade in 1209. Perhaps this group still exists in secret and Simon is a member of this group. "Rex Mundi"!!
Either option would work for me, just let me know which works best in your campaign, and I'll go with it. Or, if you have a different option just let me know.
As far as the Gun goes, with the Cather option thats not a problem, as they feel to fight the greater evil, they must use whatever options are available including force or magic, since they believe the evil is as strong as the good.
If he stays within the Catholic doctirne either the pistol could be so old it dosen't work, and is only used as a threat to ensure escape, or I could get rid of it completely. Its really not a big deal either way to me.
