Nicolo's reaction speed allowed him to dodge the fire attack, but when his eyes met the one mage, he felt his sanity begin to slip. A Crown of jagged iron appears on his head, and the world begins to warp around him. It was as if the veil had lifted, as if he could see clearly for the first time.

He saw the paladin turn around and transform into a Death Knight. The aparition turned and glared at Arcata, freezing her blood with a look. Nicolo saw Arcata fall to the ground, and a rage overtook him. He turned to the Death Knight, who had once been a paladin, and kicked it in the chest.

The kick seemed to jar something loos in him. This didn't make sense. None of it did. He looked back towards the robed figures, seeing them as his fellow monks, from back at the monastery. They were his friends, his allies. But...but they weren't here. They couldn't be here.

Nicolo looked at the monk in the center, his old mentor, Armasto. He couldn't be here. This wasn't real.

Nicolo ran to the left, around the monks and away from Arcata, or anyone other than the monks. He then took his staff and struck once at the Armasto.

OOC: in case all that was confusing, the Magdalena was the "Death Knight" and "Armasto" is the mage who charmed him.

Nicolo hit the Magdalena with an unarmed attack ([roll0] damage: [roll1])

The he moves himself away from anyone but the monks.

Then he attacks the mage that charmed him with his staff: [roll2] Damage: [roll3])

Late morning
Round 2

With her opponent down thanks to Arcata, Magdalena surveyed the situation. She turned just as one of the rear mages cast a ball of fire at her, striking her in her armored chest. She heard the sizzle of her flesh and the smell of burned cloth and flesh as she took a step back, but resolved herself. Her eyelids felt heavy, her brain sluggish, and she recognized the effects of a sleep spell. She focused on the pain of her burns and fought off the enchantment.

Concentration save: 1D20+2 = [13]+2 = 15

“I don’t know who you are, but you now face the wrath of the Church!” Magdalena spoke surprisingly calmly. Judging by the spells cast, she picked her next target and charged the mage in the back casting the enchantment, driving at him with her greatsword, though her blade was deflected when Nicolo suddenly attacked her. The kick did no damage through her armor, but threw off her blow against the mage. She gave him a confused look as he ran and attacked her target with his staff.

Lucien looks towards Rossa.

"Girl get Giovanni out of the damn box."

He turns back towards the robed mages. He lifts his hammer and grins.

"You picked the wrong day to try and kill me mates."

Lucien lifts his shield and runs at the mage throwing flames at the others. He swings his hammer striking at the man. As Lucien moves small tendrils of electricity begin to ripple across his armor.

Jilliana watched the sudden explosion of violence with something akin to horror. Even though it seemed like at least some of those involved were not trying to inflict lethal damage, it was still probably the most violence she had ever witnessed at one time- this WAS a civilized city, after all.

Still, it could not be allowed to continue.

From the look of the things, the thugs were out of the equation, downed or fled with only their leader still a threat- and the dwarf seemed to be handling him. The half-elven woman ought to be able to free that poor man (?) from his wooden confinement.

The mages, however, were another matter. As much as she loved the arcane arts, even Guild members had no business contending (and violently, no less!) with a paladin of the Maker. If nothing else, it would provoke the ire of the Sacred Order of Arcane Vigilance, known to the common folk as the Witchguard) and that would be a trial to anyone who dabbled in the arcane. If they had a disagreement, there were rules, procedures, even forms to be filed- that was how civilized people handled such things; not by brawling in the streets...

No, this wouldn't do. They had to be taken in hand, shown the error of their ways. Perhaps held for the city watch, or even (shudder) the attention of the Witchguard themselves. It was almost enough to make Jilliana wish she had a more advanced understanding of combat magic...

She looked over the situation again. Quarters were too close for certain things, but still... She debated for a second or two, then dropped a clay globe almost straight down- it wasn't much, but it would help to contain matters, and it didn't risk DAMAGING anyone. Spellcasting license or not, she didn't want to explain something like THAT to the authorities.

>Move= none
>Action= Cast Grease, aimed so that it catches just the rearmost mages, and the area behind them (to help cut off escape, and so as to NOT target those attacking them). If the situation is such that she can only get one mage without helping a PC, do so, and use the area to help cut off escape. 10 foot square of difficult terrain, lasts for 1 minute; DC 13 DEX to avoid a fall if in the area initially, entering, or ending turn in the area.

Iacopo was thrown hard to the ground by the raging dwarf, pierced by the spikes on the warrior’s armor and causing blood to pool beneath him. Though the Half-Orc tried to fight off Federigo, the dwarf’s ferocity and speed seemed to have placed the advantage entirely out of his hands: it was all he could do to force himself back to his feet and realize that this was entirely hopeless. He wasn’t being paid enough to deal with this and wasn’t about to risk his life against mages and Maker knew what else. Iacopo turned his back on Federigo, exposing it, and ran for his life.

Rossa was rushing past the Dwarf, ignoring Federigo and Iacopo entirely to get at the crate. Her blade was sheathed, a crowbar appeared in her hand from some sheathe sewed into her clothing, and she began to pry the top open under orders from Lucien. On the other side of the alley, the battle was still raging.

While the guildsman who charmed Nicolo had watched with a smug hint of satisfaction when the monk lashed out at his allies, that satisfaction turned to fear the moment Nicolo rushed in to strike. The staff cracked hard against the mage’s shoulder, the wizard trying meekly to defend themself and failing to do so. The second after the contact of his weapon with flesh and bone, the haze that had affected the monk suddenly dissipated: Before him was not his mentor, but an enemy of Arcata and therefore himself. The Death Knight he struck was the Paladina that had pledged to protect Arcata. Something had confused and dulled his senses, had pulled the wool over his eyes, but now Nicolo saw clearly again.

That same Knight swung but the Mage was prepared this time, easily side-stepping the blow and preparing to deal with both of these assailants. His coworker was also as fortunate when the Sailor with the Hammer charged forward. The female spellcaster saw the blow coming from a mile away and easily leapt backwards to ignore the strike, already preparing her next conjuration to deal with these meddlesome pests. The spellwork was growing louder, the incantations and evocations flowing from the wizards in increasingly more vibrato pitches …

Until both suddenly lost their balance and fell upon their backs, reagents in hand skittering through the slickened street and throwing them into utter confusion and panic. Neither could tell where the spell had come from (Though The Magdalena had noticed a spike in arcane talents from just around the corner of the alleyway) but both assumed the absolute worst. They had been trapped and tricked, not the other way around! Panic spread until they were yelling in Magnanimo that the Witchguard had surely caught onto them, and both uttered a quick word of power … and then vanished from sight. Careful observation could show that their invisible bodies were attempting to navigate the greased cobblestone and run for their lives with all haste.

Their leader, badly injured and seeing that now they stood alone, looked at the unraveling situation and knew that there was no victory here: only capture and questioning with the Ordinators of Arcane Vigilance … or death at the hands of these ruffians. Rather than give them the satisfaction or betraying the masters that wanted Arcata back in the first place, the mage turned their wand to their own chest.

” You’ve made powerful enemies here today. I hope the girl is worth it.”

It was said not with a sneer or venom, but an almost chilly sincerity. A phrase was chanted and the wand illuminated in a flash of light. The next instant, the guild member was down on the ground, the wand rolling out of slender fingers and skittering to a stop on the cobblestone.

GM: I can safely state that we are out of combat at this point, but there are still a few things that can be done.

Federigo has an OA against Iacopo, if he so chooses. He can also be pursued through an Athletics Check.

The 2 Mages are fleeing as well, but have cast Invisiblity. While Detect Magic can clearly see that an Illusion Spell was cast, it cannot see through the Invisibility. Either an Investigation Check to track them or a much more difficult Athletics or Acrobatics Check would be needed to try and stop them before they flee entirely. If in pursuit, remember the Grease spell requires a DC13 Dex Save to stay upright, and this counts as Difficult Terrain for 10 Feet.

In case it was not clear, the Leader has taken the Magical Cyanide option here.

Arcata is also still asleep, and would probably enjoy being woken up.

Everyone earns 1 Point of Inspiration for good writing, clever actions, and good flow for the scene. Short, but sweet, well done all of you.

Lucien curses as the pair of mages slip fall and disappear. He growls at their cowardice and turns back towards Iacopo. Seeing the man fleeing Lucien raises his hammer.

"Shealbhú go tapa"

The runes in his hammer flash and Iacopo feels all his muscles seize up as the magic takes effect. Lucien makes sure that Giovanni is safe and then walks towards Iacopo.

[sblock=Action]Casting Hold Person on Iacopo. He will need to make a DC 14 Will save or be paralyzed.[/sblock]

Arcata's eyes flutter open and she frowns a little on seeing Nicolo's face. What the devil was he doing here in her roo...

With a quick, panicked indrawn breath she sits up straight, forcing Nicolo to back away a little or be bonked into by her.

"A spell! I...oh." Bodies on the ground, people nursing wounds. Her stomach felt like it was crawling slowly up her throat.

"...did I kill anyone?" Arcata asked the monk, her hand stealing towards her mouth. "I remember...I tried not to."
