If that is the artifact in the movie, maybe its powers changed during the Spellplague.

Yeah maybe. I like to use the Spellplague as justification for why all sorts of things don't work in 5e how they worked in 1e through 3e. You know, like how some of the dragons that have been around for ages are missing their unique spells in their 5e incarnations (or can't cast any spells at all). I just say "the Spellplague messed things up" and move on.

That said, I doubt we'll get a Spellplague reference in the movie, but you never know ...

It's been awhile since I played BG1,2, & 2 a half so that is good to know, it reinforces my theory.
