Trying to find an unkillable scary clown monster...

That's the description. You can't kill it, you need to do a successful perform check or something to make it go away. I've poured over my books and I know I have it someplace, but can't for the life of me remember where.

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Not a clue.

Honestly, though, if I saw it, and it was that bad, I'd probably hate it. There's exactly one way to get rid of it, and it requires a very specific resource that most parties simply don't have. That strikes me as a rather awful design.

I don't know, but now I'm giggling madly at the thought of a tarasque in greasepaint.

It might be the sleep deprivation, admittedly.

There are Grey Jesters in Heroes of Horror, the Joystealers in MM4? And then you might also be thinking of the Carnival Krewe monsters from the old Swords and Sorcery modules? Lots of 'killer clown' types there...

Slainte,

... no one yet? I'll keep looking. I know it's an official monster, it's eluding me.
It could be a Dragon Magazine creature, I don't remember.

Encore (Ex) Fueled by anger and bitterness, a taunting haunt
is difficult to send to its final rest. A taunting haunt that
is destroyed by any means returns to existence after 24
hours. These creatures can be driven away only when
defeated in a battle of wits or put to rest only when their
final wishes are met (see below)

From the entry.

Not unkillable, but Taunting Haunt, Monster Manual 5. PG 84, I think.
Taunting Haunt, that's it!
Did you not read my post? I'm almost sure it's the one. It's under H for Haunt.
I did miss your post, sorry about that. Thank you.

The Encore ability renders them immortal, they will return after 24 hours of being killed. This is the monster that's been haunting my imagination.
