The PCs haven't been there yet, so it's a bit of a spoiler, but IMC that place is variously called "Riven" (in Dwarf) or "Pandemonium" (in Old Human). Elves, of course, call it "Har'oloth".
It is the darkness within worlds, the cracked foundation of reality, and through the cracks leaks the darkness between worlds and the darkness within other worlds. You can get to many places by traveling deep enough. A wise and experienced guide may even get you there alive.
Deep shadowed cracks and fissures howl with the wind-between-worlds, where the darkness of one seeps into the darkness of another. Brave Dwarves sail stone ships from sunless shores through seas of shadow, the great granite galleons gliding wakeless thorough strata and shadow and ... something else.
