The next three rooms are all similar bedrooms, neatly decaying, but empty of anything of value. At the eastern end of the hallway, the next door proves to lead into a suite of rooms matching that at the far end where the spider lived. Ter-raen braces himself and opens the northern door, and a burst of dim light floods the hallway. There is a hole in the roof here, through which a steady rain is falling, forming a puddle in the remains of what used to be a bed, now just a square-ish pile of soggy, mold-slimed junk. Perched at one end of the pile is a small bat-winged humanoid of indeterminate gender. Its skin is a slick, slimy surface, reminiscent of the underside of logs left submerged in mud. It hisses and bares sharp fangs, mantling its wings threateningly.

Round 1

Reacting quickly to the intrusion, the bat-winged creature hops forward and belches a spray of acid. The party's preparations hold good, though, and everyone ducks easily out of the way, catching only stray droplets that burn and sting. (everyone saves, taking half damage, total 1 damage each.)

[sblock=knowledge(planes) or bardic knowledge DC 12]This bat-winged creature is a mephit. Judging from its wet features, it hails from the elemental plane of water.

[sblock=DC 17]Looks like an ooze mephit. Their breath is a nasty acid, and can cause partial blindness, making combat difficult.

[sblock=DC 22]They heal with supernatural quickness in water or mud[/sblock]

Ter-raen draws his scimitar as noisily as he can. First a big spider, now a big bat! The surprises just never end... The rather pissed-off half-orc is now suddenly itching to make an example of this bat!

ooc: I'd assumed, since you planned to do total defense before opening the door, that you'd already be armed. No need to spend an action to draw a weapon.

Gildrim's head snaps around to look at Ter-raen. "Whit? Are we nae fightin' nae mair?"

He scuttles away from the... winged thing to give everyone time to think. "Hey, mephit! We're freends! No fight! No fight!" he calls from around the corner.

OOC: Bardic knowledge 1d20+7=12; withdraw G20-G19-F19. Seriously, wtf?

The mephit alights on the floor and steps back, preening and posturing as arrogantly as its three-foot frame allows. "You want surrender? Okay. Leave shinies on ground and Murgwul let you live." It points imperiously toward your weapons.

Gildrim beats his head against the wall a few times. "Nixies an' grigs an' mephits! Coud they nae find ony ither place tae live in th' whole ay th' swamp?" he grumbles to himself.

Pulling himself together, he cautiously pops his head back around the corner. "Mugwurgle, is it? Did ye iver happen tae run intae th' giant hungrysome devil-speeder that lurks doun yonder way? Or did ye iver meet three wee pernicketie gresslowper men wha claimed th' whole hoose belanged tae them, an' nae tae ye?"

A big smile on his lips, Ter-raen raises his blade triumphantly, shield held facing the little creature who thinks he has gotten the upper hand against them. "CHARGE!" he roars, thinking that the mephit has let his guard down.

ooc: I assume the mephit is posturing like Ter-raen did for this round, so I'll just declare his intention to move in and attack.

Charge 1d20+8 = 21, Damage 1d6+4 = 10
