I use point buy with this formulation: number of point = square root of the bribe value, in euro.

Just joking. I think next time I make players roll characters, I'll use 3d6 reroll 1's.

One thing I'll never use is preventing players from assigning their scores to their ability freely.

32 point buy or 4d6 drop a single 1 rolled each time

Any order... but if you roll badly you can switch for a 28 point buy.... varies... but rarely do we have below 32 point games.

3d6 in Order, BUT...

...I allow trade-offs between abilities. This has varied over time, and currently stands as follows:

PHYSICAL

  • Strength
  • Dexterity
  • Constitution
MENTAL

  • Intelligence
  • Wisdom
CHARISMA

COST FOR +1 INCREASE TO ONE ABILITY

  • Physical Ability: -2PHY or -3MEN or -4CHA
  • Mental Ability: -2MEN or -3PHY or -3CHA
  • Charisma: -2PHY or -2MEN

I need my players strong! :D

They roll 3d6 drop the lowest and add 6. That means they don't tend to die as often at lower levels, which is great. As a tradeoff, they hardly ever get any magical items, so later on their power level is actually lower than average. I find that this works very well. :b:

I give the characters 26 dice which they then have to split into 6 piles, then they go through each of the six piles to come up with six attributes which they then assign as they wish.

As a DM, I've always used point buy variants (oriniginally 1-for-1 with 80 or so points in 2e). As a player, I've usually used 4d6 variants, though my most recent tabletop character is a by-the-book 4d6 character.

I voted for standard, although I actually modify it a little bit: I've let my characters roll 7 stats and drop the lowest entire stat. I think I might move to standard but reroll any 1s, as posted here, next time I DM. Not quite as generous, but still good enough...
