A friend of mine in the industry referred to them as "wahtzee" back when they were known only for M:tG and Pokemon, and I picked it up from him. It's just a handy shortcut.

When talking to some one I say "Wizards", but when posting to a messageboard "WotC" is quicker and easier to type.

I've called them WotC ("what-see") ever since I heard Gary Gygax pronounce it that way at Gencon '99, because I'm such a fanboy.
