The rat tunnel is long and windy, but it eventually brings Kalath out into a much larger area.
Kalath finds himself standing on a ledge which circles around a great pit. Far below he sees fires belching up out of the bottom of the pit and the smell is a combination of smoke and garbage. The ledge circles up and around to his right and down and around to his left. There are other tunnels, Kalath sees, connected to the ledge, though none are very close to the one he just left.

The ledge makes almost a complete circuit around the massive pit before Kalath reaches another tunnel off of the path. The small tunnel is big enough to crawl through.
The ledge continues to circle the pit.
Below the fires are a bit closer and the smell of burning garbage is stronger. A faint sulphurous smell is also intermingled into the smoke now.

Kalath goes further down the pit. The ledge winds around the side twice more and now the fires are much closer and the air is getting much hotter.
There is a large cavernous opening off the side of the ledge here. It is much larger than the other rat tunnels that Kalath saw above. As kalath stares into the dark opening, he is suddenly aware of something moving on the ledge below him.
It is vaguely ratlike, but much larger and it may have wings and horns.

As Kalath moves further down the pit and draws closer to the rat-thing, it becomes clear it is a demon of some sort, though a bestial rat-like demon. It has horns and small wings and a barbed tail, but is otherwise a giant rat.
As Kalath moves closer the rat-demon sees him and hisses violently at him, its fur bristling. It does not charge or attack, but it is clear that if Kalath wishes to move any further down the ledge he will have to deal with the monster somehow.
