a note on Shilellagh, this cantrip is very handy if you do not have a magic weapon, so if you are a melee orientated cleric, this beats using a spell slot (Magic Weapon spell) to mitigate resistance to normal weapons. now, regarding the 'classic/original' cleric versus it's 5E iteration, they didnt have an action economy other than 'move, attack, orcast a spell' so swinging a weapon and using...

Yes, we did just this after purchasing the Red Box in around 78, and before buying any hardcovers (AD&D), by 79 we'd scrapped most of it and were playing ad hoc. We also created a martial art rpg by 83, which I wish I still had the write up for. in short, where there's a whip...there's a way...

I personally like this kind of item, harkening back to the old days, ye old +1,+3 vs lycanthropes and etc ;) This is also a viable candidate, the problem is that in 5E a +3 is also a very rare weapon I was trying to quantify a rare version of a dragon slayer oathbow

Basically, you are talking about an Oathbow, with the wielder's sworn enemy being a dragon. An Oathbow is very rare and has a lot more to offer than the rare Dragon Slayer sword. I'd compromise between the two, tweak down an Oathbow to become a Bow of Dragon Slaying ( or even of Chromatic Dragon Slaying??) Side by side comparison: Dragon Slayer, +1 magic weapon ( sword), which deals an...

one could give the human +5 to ability scores divided as they choose, with no more than 2 points attributed to any one score. this is less than the 6 points divided equally, but mitigates a third +2 potential. So possible of three abilities getting +1 and one gets +2; or two abilities get +2, and one gets +1. The downside is the even spread only boosts five ability scores

...me reading, but at the moment I can't get onto Invisible castle; "503 - Service Not Available". Just thought I'd let you know early. As invisiblecastle is still down, you may feel free to use the embedded dice roller on EN World for your stats if you desire. I also took a look at your character concept, and I am not sold on the idea. If you are wanting to go the route of a paladin with the Oath of Devotion, that is a poor fit for a follower of Trithereon, especially one who engages in vigilantism. Trithereonites have little use for things like honor and honesty, two important tenets of the Oath of Devotion. A Trithereonite paladin would almost certainly swear an Oath of Vengeance, as retribution against evil is Trithereon's primary portfolio. If you merely alter the intended Sacred Oath to the Oath of Vengeance, then the background seems to fit the concept perfectly. Oath of the Ancients could also work as well. The Oath of Devotion simply does not fit the character as described. Radaceus, the more the merrier for the moment. I have looked over the proposed character concept and have a few comments. You note the character's origins are in the Barrens. Did you intent this to be the area known as the Rovers of the Barrens which is far to the north? If so, the area has been in a rather constant state of war with the lands of Iuz and the Horned Society for the last 60 years or so. Both Iuz and the Horned Society employ humanoid mercenaries such as orcs which could fit into the narrative. However, if I might suggest a closer location to the Domain of Greyhawk, the Pomarj was occupied by non-humans following the Hateful Wars between the Ulek States and the humanoid tribes of the area which lasted for about 10 years starting about 85 years ago. Ever since then, the Ulek States, the Wild Coast, and the Domain of Greyhawk have clashed with the humanoid tribes who have now occupied the Pomarj. The humanoids of the Pomarj are mostly orcs and goblins, and they have attacked settlem...

This character had hunters mark, bless and haste up on it? Heh. There is about zero chance of this happening in my campaign. You need a ridiculously good series of initiative rolls and a massive resource expenditure. Is there a reason you can't just read Celtavian's post? Haste was not in play in the first-round shooting of the Marilith: there was Bless and Hunter's Mark. The fifth attack roll came from a ranger class feature granting an additional attack in the first round of combat. Haste seems to have been cast later on in the combat. A marilith's initiative bonus is +5, isn't it (from DEX)? It's not that remarkable for two out of 6 PCs to go before it, especially the one who also has +5 DEX. (And that's ssuming they did go first - they may have cast their spells while the Marilith closed - Celtavian's post doesn't make the turn sequence entirely clear.) I also don't find two 1st level spells in a party of 6 10th level PCs to be massive resource expenditure in the opening round, and I ...

It's nice to see some healthy discussion coming out of this, regardless of differences May I ask a favor of either BoldItalic , or @iserith could one of you please post the posts with the maps on the first page for prosperity? Encounter 1 Encounter 2 Encounter 3 Encounter 4a & 4b Encounter 5, 6, & Black Razor's Lair I've still to update the Lair post with Encounter 5 & 6, life is unforgiving when it comes to making time to do these things. I will also add some demi-plane corridor maps in case of a need for random encounter 7 or 8. I could edit your links in, but I can't actually read your maps. I don't have anything that reads .pdn files. I'd mean meaning to ask, could you post jpeg versions or something?
  • 01:15 PM - Sezarious quoted Radaceus in post Maximillian's earthen grasp and spell range
If the Hand has a target restrained, the target remains restrained, but since the caster uses their action to do something else, the hand cannot crush, nor can it move as this requires the caster to use their action. Furthering that, the caster could have a target restrained, and cast another non-concentration spell, or attack (use an action).Furthering that, a Caster with a target grasped and restrained, could direct it to crush the target ( or move to a new target if need be) and make a bonus action attack, or cast a bonus action spell.Agreed, range aside, in order to do anything decent with the spell, three things have to line up every round:1. Caster must Maintain concentration2. Caster must Use an action to squeeze (good auto damage lvs 3-4)3. The restrained enemy must fail their save every roundLike I said, grappling a scary enemy so you can run away is like using suggestion on them to run in the opposite direction to you or maintaining a web spell or an invisibility spell on a companion ...

Well, since you seem think you are the only one capable of optimizing, finish testing it then, it's all there for you to run it. It's a great idea in concept and worthwhile to have a crack at it. The more the better. And, it does not matter what type of group play tests this; since it is set to test optimized characters, if that level of difficulty is proven, a subpar group will fall short. Cant have results by standing on the sideline boohooing, get in there and show us what you got. I did show it. Got told I was doing it wrong. No wish to have that discussion again.

This is sort of where we sit, depending on how many dice need to be rolled, and how well prepared they are versus that/those types of monsters, they might only make it through a couple encounters, require a short rest, and then another encounter drains them requiring the long rest. Likewise, they might breeze through 5 or 6 before a long rest, but this is rarer. May I ask, what sort of encounters were they? Main story line, random sandbox outdoor exploring, dungeon crawl/room by room? Mostly sandbox small room encounters in a set of ruins (3 smaller dungeons in the same area). Mostly mellee with things like winter wolf breath. We generally short rest after 2 or 3 fights, sometimes 1 if it is really bad (CR 11 vs 5th level PCs). He is not using any type of encounter guidelines one of the later fights was vs 2-3 elemental (Ice ones refluffed water) and elemental myrmidons.

Great wrap up, Flamestrike! One thing I was considering throughout the adventure, is, being linear in story, there are no side treks, or distractions. Bringing up the '6-8' possibility adding a random encounter en route to the mountain, and a possible extra room or two once inside tye demi plane would help. Not knocking the write up as it is, just a suggestion to the DMs running it if things are not chalkenging enough for the party running it. I generally do just this - have optional side quests tacked onto the main adventure. A favorite is the 'long forgotten secret door that leads to a powerful monster and some cool treasure' or a little mini dungeon on the way to the main adventure locale (PCs pass by a number of mounds that are in fact barrows - they notice one is open...). If I have time during the week I'd also throw maybe a hook or two in the dungeon for another quest. A map leading to a long lost tomb, a captured NPC that offers to reward the PCs after the adventure - and also asks ...

I think William Gibson wrote something on the topic, but that's a decade old now... Gibson's newest novel, The Peripheral, also has longevity in it. Very cool way, IMO. See link above.

Gloom only gives disadvantage on Perception checks. A given area might be lightly or heavily obscured. In a lightly obscured area, such as dim light, patchy fog, or moderate foliage, creatures have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight. Only darkness or invisibility give Disadvantage on ranged attacks. You indicated that Darkvision worked. There was no reason to believe it gave disadvantage on ranged attack rolls. Why do you think this? Im aware of this, but I dont see darkness as a binary [dark/ dim] thing. Its entirely reasonable that it could be so dim to be almost dark [limiting vision and ranged attacks even further], or shadowy without being dim [no bonus to stealth checks, but reduced visual range]. I could also impose perception checks to locate something in darkness, or dexterity checks to avoid tripping over when in it, and the rules are quiet on those aspects. If youre intrested, here is some text from the recent adventure from WoTC: "Barovian daylight ...

@Flamestrike and @Celtavian, I asked earlier on, what are the maximum number of spells for a wizard for this test? I find it is not realistic to assume a wizard only has the bare minimum allotted from leveling up; That in 13 levels of travels scrolls and what not would have made themselves available to be ascribed, more so as the player earned more income at those higher levels. The example I had mentioned before was an additional Six-1st,Five 2nd, Four 3rd, Three-4th, Two-5th, and One-6th level spells. This would be a Total of Fourteen-1st, Nine-2nd, Eight-3rd, Seven-4th, Six-5th, Five-6th, and Two-7th level spells for a 13th level wizard (assuming the wizard did nto take lower level spells when higher level slots became available) @Lord Twig Dont forget you can cast 8 hr buffs, and as a wizard take a short rest and regain the slots. Granted, due to time constraints this should probably be done prior to initial encounter, and as noted in by Flamestrike for encounter I, take a short res...

Flamestrike And this for 5, 13th level PCs, what was the magic item limits again? I think I may run this with the level 14 characters I used for a one shot against a demi-lich, since my players are semi familiar with them, adjust them to level 13 of course Fire Genasi Evoker Human Battlemaster Wood Elf Cleric of Mystra (Arcane) Mountain Dwarf Paladin of Gorm (Oath of the Crown) Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster no MC I'd say they are probably not up to maximum optimal specs, but the players playing them have been at this for 30+ years, and I'd like to test that aspect...+'s versus player ingenuity The party had access to all official splat (no UA) point buy and average HP as per PHB. Magic items were ad hoc, but most PCs had a rare/ very rare magic item, a minor item or two, and all carried 2 potions of greater healing.
