I am just polling spelljammer's popularity, as I am one of the few pockets of players who sail the void. Any others?
I am a big Spelljammer fan and am on a quest to hook up with as many other Spelljammer fans as possible.
I read it once and was disgusted. I just use homebrew conversions of 2e material, as the Spelljammer conversion was just horrible.
Shadows of the Spider Moon isn't my favourite Spelljammer product (that would be SJA3 Crystal Spheres) but I do think it adds some good ideas to the pool of SJ material. Used in conjunction with Beyond the Moon's Pyrespace adaptation, I think it is on a similar level with the Astromundi Cluster.
Deathspider a Drow ship... Damn it...
I think a lot of that sort of stuff was down to the "SJ on a postcard" design philosophy. I believe that it all had to stand on its own, with any non-core elements being pulled. Drow using deathspiders is a change from 2e. But then we do know they use Jade Spider ships (and the Jade Spiders contained within them) to attack neogi ships. It probably wouldn't be too hard to introduce some sort of backstory where the drow of SotSM steal deathspiders from the neogi.
I like the new version and want more information like using psionics (and a similar helm).
Beyond the Moons has support for Shadows of the Spider Moon, as does Andy Collins' website.
Psijammer Helm
This large chair is used to convert psionic power into motive force, suitable for powering a spelljammer ship.
Manifester Level: 15th. Prerequisites: Craft Universal Item, True Telekinesis. Market value: 60,000 gp.
ENjoy! I think that is cooler for Illithid ships than the malenkey series helm.
I think there is a place for both types of helm. Series helms could be something from way back in the early days of the Illithid Empire and the arcane could flood the market with minor and major helms so that others races would travel in the same areas as the mind flayers and have a reason to clear them out of certain spheres.
If you have a backstory to the Series Helm like that, then your Psijammer Helm could be a new breakthrough with a small number of nautiloid ships using it to attain a much better Tactical Raiting and perform a lot better during ship-to-ship combat.
I ran a Spelljammer game for 5 years, once a week at minimum. It was the best campaign I've ever run.
The Dungeon version was good, but my preference lies somewhere in between the two version.
That fits in well with what Dragonhelm said about Spelljammer on his blog. I think the Pyrespace thing is a good compromise as it takes Shadow of the Spider Moon into the SJ universe (as a crystal sphere).
And I had no problem with the whole "Crystal Sphere" thing...
I love the crystal spheres. The best thing about them is that they form a barrier that contains deities and even cosmologies. So you can have funky rules that change magic or the outer planes and they are logically restricted to individual crystal spheres.
I think that 3rd Edition was a lost opportunity for Spelljammer. A 3e Spelljammer Campaign Setting, with a SJSRD, could have opened up Wildspace and the crystal spheres to third party publishers and encouraged all of the 3PP campaign settings to give GMs a list of planets so that they could build a crystal sphere around every d20 System campaign setting.
Is it too late to bump you back?
