The New iPhone 3G

I hate to say it, but this may have pushed me over the edge. It's pretty darn nifty.

Anyone know if it has bluetooth?

Depends what you mean by Bluetooth. Does it have the hardware? Yes. But as far as I have been able to find out they've gimped it and it only has firmware support for an external headset to make calls on and external speakers. One of the great things about Bluetooth is being able to share stupid crap with your friends, so the lack of Bluetooth support is a big downer for me. Having said that I am still tempted. We'll see when my current contract runs out in October. The HTC Diamond is looking awfully good so it's either that or an iPhone; there are pros and cons for both.

I don't know if this helps you but...

My wife and I sync to the same iTunes, but we've set up different playlists. Her ipod is set to sync her playlists, mine is set to sync my playlists, and we both end up with the music we want on board.

Would that work for you?

Yeah, but it would also mean setting up playlists for 4 gigs+ worth of music each. Too much of a PITA, especially considering our standard iPods did drag-and-drop. But I suppose if it came to that ...

I'm personally trying to decide between the new iPhone and a Blackberry Curve. I already use the Blackberry....7280, I think, and the Curve seems like a big improvement....GPS, camera, video, music-playing functionality...

Does the iPhone have the same secure e-mail transmission that the Blackberry does? What about a camera? Ability to open or edit documents like MS Word arriving in e-mail attachments? What is the virtual keyboard like to use? I'm rather used to the Blackberry keyboard by now.

For the price that Rogers is charging for the Curve, I can buy it plus about a 4G MicroSD memory card, for the same amount as the iPhone 3G.

Last year, when they showed it off, I was only a few months into a two month contract, and wasn't about to pay a 200 cancellation fee on top of the 600 dollar phone. i decided to be patient, wait for my contract to be up and then switch. It was tech, and bound to be better and cheaper by then.

A few months later, when they reduced the price by 200 dollars, I was kinda tempted to switch, but decided, no, I'll honor my contract with my current provider.

Now, I'm really, really tempted to ditch my contract. Two things are holding me back for December, though. 1) I just bought an expensive toy and want to hold off and save a bit, and 2) hoping for a 32 gig version by then.
Waiting always seems to pay off with electronic devices. Either the price goes down or the products just get better. But you can't wait forever. ;)

We've got about 6Gb of music and setting up the playlists took about 10 minutes in iTunes - it was ridiculously quick to do. I suppose if you are frequently adding new music it might be a little more annoying, but not too much.

I've got no comparison with the 'curve', but based on what I know?

secure email transmission - I don't know, have to check the Apple website

Camera - yep. Not good in low light, but its there.

Open word documents in emails - yes. Edit them? No. (same goes for pdf, excel, powerpoint and apples office apps too)

virtual keyboard - I find it works well, it took a little getting used to but its intelligent dictionary is actually pretty good. I imagine it is a little worse than a 'real' keyboard though.

I don't know if that helps at all!

Cheers

According to the National Post and the Globe & Mail - nope. They say the iPhone is inferior in all ways to Blackberry's much more secure and reliable data service. The general consensus among all the business writers I've read is that it would be an irresponsible business chosing an iPhone over a Blackberry if they weren't already a total Mac environment. And even then... [I have no doubt that there is a rare outlier that says otherwise.]

Outside of business, however...

I've not tried it, but 2Mp? That's nearly useless. Does it have a decent flash, at least?

2mp is higher than 1080p HD TV resolution. So I'd hardly call it useless, but no it doesn't have a flash.

Hmm...I use mine for both personal and business. The lack of Firewall worries me a bit, though. I've been kind of waiting to make a decision, and unfortunately, have missed some great deals on the Blackberry as a result. They had one a week ago, for $125, and it included a free TomTom GPS....
