I suggest giving it a try.

I've played through three sessions of Keep on the Shadowfell (tonight will be the fifth), and I like a lot of what 4E has to offer. I think the only way to give it it's fair due is to try it out.

That said, 3.5 is closer to what I want from D&D, so when my gaming group picks up our longterm campaign in August, we'll be using 3.5 instead of converting to 4E.

I'd generally suggest asking this question in the 4E forums. There are probably more there that can give you help on one-shots.

Do you own the books (or know someone that does)? If yes, pick any 3E 1st level adventure you played (preferably involving Kobolds or Goblins ;) ), and convert it. You might want to increase the number of monsters or lump several encounters together. 4E assumes larger encounter areas and more monsters to allow more maneuvering.

Or get a fan-created module. (And look for the "PHB lite" from Verys Akron - I am not sure if it's still around, though - it seems to have gone "unstickied" with the release of the actual game).

Or buy Keep on the Shadowfell (note - the adventure belongs to those that are lighter on role-playing, mystery, overland travel or investigation, but some say it's better then the Sunless Citadel adventure for 3E). You don't need the core rulebooks for this, since you can use the pre-gens - but be aware, pre-gens are never as much fun as personally crafted characters.
It will be more than long-shot, though, since the adventure will cover 3 levels of play. (Unless you run marathon sessions ;) )

Attitude: You have to be willing to "get into the game". I suppose you are, since you want to try, but generally - whenever you go with a negative opinion into anything, you will try to see it confirmed.
Don't let yourself get under "pressure" to like or hate the game, nor press your players into it (unless they always need such pressure ;) )

The best way to get into 4E is to dive into it by sort of using self-hypnosis to rewire your psychology into completely forgetting anything you once knew or are presumptuous about previous editions of Dungeons&Dragons. It really is the beginning of a whole new game aimed at a whole new generation and once you accept it as such, you can actually have some fun with it.

If you expect anything more from it, however, I do suggest remaining with the more detailed and creatively complex 3rd Edition system which also stays much more truer to 1e and 2e in terms of mythology, lore, story, and even game mechanics, to an extent.

I managed to do that and had fun just creating a Warforged Ranger and Human Paladin for 4E, without having played it yet. It's self-delusion, yes, but it's the only way for some people, I've noticed, including myself.
