No... believe me, that's not the only 'logical' conclusion. I don't doubt that somehow Rawr the gnome has punched your inner moppet, but what I can say is that I think you're humorlessly overreacting, over-reaching for stuff to get offended about, and seeing slights when there are none. See? I can have opinions, too.

If you can think the authors of that cartoon intended to mock gnome-lovers, I can think you're overreacting. Fair?

Nope, not fair at all. You see, Me saying I found the video to be "this way" and you saying you found the video to be "that way" is fair.

You ascribing anything to WHY I feel how I do about the video is against board rules and not a valid form of arguement. I know plenty of people that would find the most racist humor perfectly hilarious, if someone said it was offensive and were told they were reading too much into it and/or need to lighten up, that's just not a debatable point.

I reckon the god of Gnomes Mr trickster would approve of this video, as described in previous editions old fuddy duddy Gnomes who have lost their sense of fun need tricks to be played on them if they start getting too serious about things.

This is a good funny video that shows teasers of upcoming mechanics in the new book and makes a mockery of, the tiefling, the Gnome, D&D the new mechanics (minions) and they can do this because its a game, and although I agree with quite a bit of Political correctness (phrases like vertically challenged instead of short rubs me the wrong way) I didn't realise that we had to tread carefully around invented characters which don't exist in the real world.

No, they were not. Nothing in the movie hinted at people who liked the Gnome. Nothing in the Gnome portrayal looked like something referring to a Gnome fan.

As I said, they bumped gnomes from the PHB, and when their were complaints, their response was?

A "humorous" video making fun of their move to "monster status". Same way when folks complained about not getting enough gnome mini's (kobolds outnumbered them... and DDM is faction balanced, so "need more monsters" doesn't apply), they got the "here's your gnome mini" joke of garden gnomes.

Why can't people get a good laugh at a joke? Why always so earnest?
I feel jokes (or satire and parodies) are there to provoke a laugh and then maybe a thought, but you should laugh about the joke and think about the topic!

Seriously, I didn't really care for most of the 4e videos. I enjoy South Park at times, but I don't find EVERY south park funny. The thing is, gnome fan's were never treated all that well. Supposedly they were going to be cut from 3e also, since the designers didn't like them. The halflings only seem to make the cut because of hobbits, and there has always been an anti-small tendency to materials.

For example, it's always been common wisdom that the gnome or halfling race books sell worse, but this "wisdom" predates any such book. I'm not even sure if they were ever allowed to stand on their own to see how their books would sell.

(Conventions show that few people use gnomes. Conventions also show that most people pick from pregen characters... Survey's show... except none of the many survey's I took for WotC asked...)

Like many others, it ticked me off when I first saw it, and I dislike it being continuously trotted out by folks who don't 'understand' how it offends people. I like gnomes. Quite a bit actually. The video was made BY the people who took away the gnome I and my friends liked, and then made fun of the pseudo-gnome they propped up in his place. It's got a whole "nah-nah-nah... In your face, loser!" childlike vibe to it.

1) Getting offended over the move of a race of non-humans in a game of pretend from the PHB to the MM is absurd. Really, it is. There's no politically correct way to say that if that offends you, you're being absurd and need to get over yourself.

2) The MM has completely playable "using these races as PC races" stats for the gnome, and the description of the gnome in the MM isn't really any less robust than the description of any of the PC races in the PHB. You're not actually missing anything other than that it's in one book instead of the other. And both books were available at the same time, and it's assumed that every group has access to both of them. Of course, that just makes 1) even more absurd... you're complaining, literally, about nothing.

3) If you want to complain about 4e and the cartoon, a more viable complaint would be that (IIRC) there aren't any stats for badgers in the MM. Or very many other animals, for that matter. All of the real animals get "fantasied up" before they're statted up.

That was my reaction when I first saw it, and it was similar to the reaction of the rest of my game group. Personally, I want that video to die in a fire.

I think the video isn't funny, and it's presence as a marketing tool totally fails to take into effect that gnome fan's feelings were hurt, instead it grinds them a bit more.

I'm not saying you're absurd, nor have I. I'm saying that I think you should reflect on your reactions to the cartoon, and check to see if they match up with the actual content. Feelings are not automatically valid, nor are they immune from criticism & debate just because they're feelings.

I'm the one who used the word absurd.

And I stand by it. The half-orcs were one of my favorite 3e races. Unlike the gnomes, I don't even have perfectly workable stats in the MM to use; I just don't get the option at all.

And yet, I'm not offended in the least.

I think there is massive overreaction in this thread to what is firstly a demonstration of the video embedding feature and secondly a humorous short cartoon produced to entertain people.

Since those involved seem unable to step away from this thread, I'm closing it (and there isn't much more to discuss on this issue anyway)
