Is this a troll thread? That's pretty much what I'd say if I was starting a troll thread on this subject.

How on earth is this anything like a troll thread? Troll threads are designed to upset people and get a rise out of them, not have them calmly discuss what their favorite underused monsters are. Unless one has an undying hate of shocker lizards I don't see how that would happen.

Play more Dark Sun. Will cure you of that. The only commercial setting I have ever seen where halflings feel necessary.

Cannibal halflings, right? At Baldur's Gate 2, inside the Planar Sphere, you fight some of those. They are the only kind of halflings that make me want to place them as monsters...but still.

Ah, that's it, for the next game, I'm placing wood elves and halflings as monsters.

In my 2e gathis campaign (www.gathis.com) I am taking evry opportunity to use all the bullywugs, osquips, winged snakes and other lost 2e classics that I can. Its been a great time so far.

It helps that they are in a very old forest with an old forest with undead themes. I plan to exploit this for my next swath of unused/uncommon monsters. This game is actually online and currently recruiting if anyone is interested. Email me at danjnm_2000@yahoo.com with a subject line of GATHIS.

Oozes get rare at mid to high levels. I threw an Epic Pseudonatural template on a Gelatinous Cube once, and that was kinda fun.

I haven't used most of the underwater races -- one Fish Dude race is really more than I need, since it's so easy to make normal fantasy races into aquatic version (e.g. "sea elf", "merfolk", etc.).

Most new land humanoids won't ever see use in my games either (yakfolk, etc.).

Peryton, leucrotta, intellect devourer.

Hell, in 1e, the intellect devourer was just TERRIFYING. God save you if you had to fight one.

Not cannibal. They very seldom eat other halflings. Humans on the other hand... :) Another little detail is that they prefer the meat of their enemies raw when they eat it.
