What is it about the GSL that is really a deal breaker?

  • You get to use the D&D name and logo on your book (only the back cover though) and in advertising instead of the afore mentioned lame d20 logo.
  • You get to support the current edition of D&D.
That's about it.
You're kidding me. :erm:

Okay, let's switch this around. What makes the d20STL + OGL combo more attractive than the GSL?

D20STL+OGL - today? Nothing, since the D20 is expiring. At an indescribable time before this happened? The ability to be somewhat easily grouped in with other similar systems and ease-of-branding for the customer. However, this was reprimanded pretty heavily from 2006 and onwards where the majority of (online) customers knew that a "3.5 compatible" or "OGL" book was created for the D20 system.

Had the rules been made available to them, there would be no Pathfinder and little other support for 3.5 today.
Not according to my understanding of what Paizo staff have said. The reason (or, more correctly, one of the reasons) for Pathfinder wasn't anything to do with the rules being unavailable, it was to do with the GSL and licensing terms not being available. Paizo simply wasn't willing to bank its business on a license with unknown terms and (reading between the lines) their experience with the whole Dungeon/Dragon magazines situation meant they weren't about to take a "trust me" from WotC on it. As it turns out, they made the right call (for them at least) on that one!

Time period to cure breaches if they are identified.

No restriction on the ability to publish product lines under the OGL.

Use full statblocks of standard monsters.

Use core demons and devils and drow, etc.

Redefine terms in the srd (though under the later d20 stl not certain core game mechanic terms).

You can always publish the product contents without the trademark logo under the terms of the OGL even if the d20 STL is revoked.

I would add "no online SRD". Frankly, its a wonderful tool for writing with. Why is it an issue that one can't reproduce the basic rules? The money all comes from the sales of all the post-core non-OGC books and anyone buying an "alternate PH" probably wasn't part of that market anyway. (Or has plenty of cash available and buys both.)

Thank you very much, Voadam.

You're more helpful than someone I recently know.

For the record, I will be thrilled to state that I am wrong about things I have said earlier this thead, if indeed the revised GSL proves me wrong. I quality GSL is in everybody's best interests, even if you don't care for 4E.
