Random Treasure Table?

Step One: Open the DMG to the section on rewards
Step Two: Roll 1d10
Step Three: Profit! (Literally, give the PCs that result).

Actually, a deck of cards (Ace through 10) would work better, as you would discard each result as the party received it. Thus, they get everything they deserve per level, but randomly instead of in any sensible manner.

What do you want to get out of random distribution of treasure? From a player's perspective, it adds nothing and can often subtract a lot from the game ("Why didn't this superintelligent bad guy use this powerful magic item against the party that was trying to kill him?" etc.)

I'm looking for a way to randomly determine which "2nd Level Item" to include in a particular parcel. Something similar to the random tables present in previous editions. I saw something similar to what I'm looking for several weeks ago, but the internet has swallowed it.

Not so. My players would like random treasure distribution... so would I as DM. It adds a certain unpredictability to this game which is fun.

Random treasure has been a part of every previous version of D&D and has been there for a good reason. Unpredictability and randomness is in many ways the heart of D&D, and the most fun aspect. It keeps everyone on their toes and encourages creativity, spurring the imagination.

And who says the bad guy can't use an item?

Anyhow, yeah... I'd love to see an online generator that creates an entire level's worth of treasure parcels at random. It would save time and add more fun to the game as well.

I'm another random treasure guy. And the treasure is generated when I'm building the encounter, so if there's a +1 sword, you better believe someone is going to be wielding it.

Stoat, a friend of mine has finished some tables that do exactly what you're looking for, but they're not polished/presentable yet. After they've been worked over and made into a PDF, I'll ask him if I can post them here.

I know I mentioned this in another thread, but I'll say it again. I've worked up a random treasure generator for my own use. It works perfectly, but I'm having some database issues (namely the connection string), that I'm kinda lazy to fix, as it works for me. Now that I see other people are looking for something similar, I may go back and see if I can fix it up for other to use. Either that or make a web version. I've got next week off, so I'll see what I can do, maybe.

I hadn't seen the previous mention. I know it's a lot of work to make something like that, but if you should ever finish it and share, it would be much appreciated!

At first I thought I had been completely beaten to the punch. But mine is a little more "advanced". Mine builds the complete treasure list, including gold and potions, and compiles it all into a list of parcels. I guess I can't continue to be lazy if you guys/gals want something a little more "complete".

Not to take away anything from your work, but this page did all that.. when I looked at the link yesterday lol. Today it just seems to stop at putting the name of a magic item in the "Magic Item Result" box. Yesterday, in the grey box at the bottom that today seems to be stuck on "Parcel results...", it filled out the parcels, complete with gold, potions, artwork, gems, and even adjusted the number of parcels based on party size, and using level-appropriate magic items. It seemed to follow the parcel system in the DMG to a T. Granted it only worked properly up to level 10, but it DID work. I dont know why its not working today :) Maybe you need to finish up and get a properly working one out Apple ;)

*EDIT* Wow, do I feel dumb. I had the mode set on "Single Item". Change it to "Calculate Parcels" and it works again. In my defense, Im going to say that drop down box wasn't there yesterday, even if it was :D
