Anyone ever think of maybe the old worn down ranges like the appalachians? Like the dwarves have been in the mountain so long it's worn down around them.

Previously, the Alps, but now, the Appalachians, because it's rarely done and there's a lot of cool stuff you can bring in by changing the inspirational material so radically.

That's my take. Forested ranges like the Black Forest, Harz, or the Swabian Mountains are mostly connected to dwarf tales.

shadow of where you live

And Dwarves as Tibetan/Nepalese. Only because I haven't mined those cultures for role-playing purposes yet.

Apparently, you picture it as the closest mountain range to yourself. For me, it is not only the Appalachians but specifically the Smokey Mountains with its forested slopes.

In fact, we are going there on a mini-vacation next month. My 3 year old son (who has been watching the old Hobbit cartoon) is looking forward to seeing Bilbo, the Dwarves and the Dragon. I will have to find something to appease him in that regard.
