Is Amaunator Back in Faerûn!?

I´d have thought that he´s in because Amaunator featured prominently in the Baldurs Gate games. A change of which i heartily approve. I like Lathander and Amaunator, and it´s cool to have them both in.

Now that's recton, lol.

God kills a puppy every time someone uses the word "retcon" wrong, as in this case.

A retcon is a change that occurs and is treated as if things were always the case (aka Lathander never existed, and has always been Amaunator). A change that occurs because of progressing storyline is not a retcon (aka Lathander existed, but he changed back into Amaunator).

The problem is, the idea that Lathander was really Amaunator was a heresy in his church. That he would apparently just go "LOL JUST MESSING WITH YOU GUYS, I WAS AMAUNATOR ALL ALONG. SORRY MY ENTIRE PRIESTHOOD, I DECIDED TO LIE TO YOU ABOUT IT FOR COMPLETELY ARBITRARY REASONS" is pretty lame. I'm not sure about it being a FULL retcon, but it comes close.

I posted this elsewhere but I think it might clarify some questions about this very topic:

The return or "Ascension of Amaunator" is mentioned in Power of Faerun released in March of 2006. It begins with a heretic of Lathander who believes in the Risen Sun heresy. It's actually a pretty interesting story. The leader of the heresy is a fire genasi by the name of Sunlord Daelegoth Orndeir who manages to perform a series of miracles and ultimately creates and casts an epic spell that, get this, creates a permanent miniature sun in the sky above Elversult! Needless to say Daelegoth creates quite a following.

/endquote.

Since I wrote that I've purchased the new 4th edition FR seeting book. The book does not explain much only to say that Amunator is now in charge. You can make of that what you will but I wouldn't blame all the changes on 4th edition when in fact the changes started more than two years ago.

Yes, it is quite evident to me that some Bhaalspawn was able to absorb enough of Amaunator's essence to rise as the god him/herself.

We know that the original Amaunator was the keeper of time, but never acted on that portfolio because it would have stepped on the toes of Mystryl (the unofficial keeper of the time stream). Amaunator declines due to lack of worship, and is reborn as Lathander, the deity of the dawn (a more limited portfolio than the entire sun), who then rises over the centuries in power. Flash forward through the Lathander years, and through the Spellplague and you no longer have anyone minding the timestream, since Mystra bought the farm. Thus, it makes sense for the original entity intended to do so to reassert himself and reclaim his ancient duty, especially as his new form has attained much of his ancient power.

It might be easier for you to make connections if you didn't approach things with such a closed mind. Trying to paint everything as "LOL I'M ON THE INTERNET WITHOUT ANY GRAMMAR" writing, which you constantly do with anything you don't like, just makes you look like a fool.

Since it does not retroactively change the continuity, it doesn't even come close to being a retcon. It's not that difficult a word to understand.

Raven - the problem with your post, aside from the fact that you seem incapable of posting without being insulting and rude, is that it's 100% speculation. There's no proof of any of that. Like so many fan made explinations for the inexplicable in 4e FR, it's just that - fan made. You could just as easily say "Because those youtube videos made him look homosexual, he changed names to avoid that reputation." Hey, look - my reason there has just as much - or just as little - verification from WotC.
