Totally sweet!

I've been thinking about getting one for a while and this just rocks. Definitely will make the console war more interesting.
I know the Arcade version doesn't come with a hard drive, but can you install one?

I know you can upgrade PS3 hard drive with a third-party laptop HD.

Any chance they'll add a Blu-Ray drive, even if it means lining Sony's pocket?

You can use an Xbox 360 HD and it'll go right on. I've got an extra 20gig somewhere around here I keep meaning to put on ebay.

BluRay is a recurring rumor actually, but nothing yet. Various parts of MS have said they'd do it, then not, then they say "we prefer digital download" and so on.

A warning if you buy the arcade and then buy a hard drive to install...Microsfot's 360 HDD's are absolutely insanely priced and its almost just worth it to buy the Premium model of the 360 if you want one.

You mean the XBOX HD is propietary? I can't buy, say a laptop HD off the shelf and install it, like you can with a PS3?

This is awesome indeed. $200 is $50 more than I make in a month, buth hopefully I'll be getting more from my government stipend in the new year.

This makes it totally worth getting for me once I buy an HDTV.

It's not going to happen. An internal drive would raise the cost too much, and Sony's not going to subsidize either an external drive or an internal drive (Toshiba subsidized the external HD-DVD drive). By the time Blu-Ray drives are cheap enough that the cost increase from dual-layer DVD is negligible, it'll be time for the PS4/Xbox 720 generation (and MS will put a Blu-Ray drive in that one).

Not really. I mean, it's a good move, and probably makes it impossible for the PS3 to pass the 360 in the US if Sony sticks to its 'no more PS3 price cuts this year' line (especially if some good sub-$300 Blu-Ray players come out this fall). But it's not a game-changing move that will let them end the inexplicable Wii dominance of this generation.

But if not for the Red Ring of Death issues, delays on cost-reducing some parts (mostly moving the CPU and GPU to a smaller manufacturing process), and the PS3's glacial uptake before this year, it's a price cut they would have made last year (instead of slashing only $20 off the Arcade, $50 off the Pro, and $30 off the Elite like they actually did).
