If I combine the Dark Sun and Ravenloft settings, I get...

This topic was covered in the 1992 Ravenloft accessory "Forbidden Lore". . .

Man, I have this book but I don't remember this stuff. Your post made me want to go dig it out but it's in storage up in Michigan. Damn, I want to read it now.

My first thought at the OP was, "Dark Loft, adventures in student housing..."

:P

I would think that part of the problem would be that "evil" needs to be a bit darker in Dark Sun to stand out. I mean, the whole setting makes Gamma World look optimistic. Midnight is probably the only setting that stands out as being more hopeless long-term.

One possibility that intrigues me is taking a great evil from the history of Athas. What if the destruction of the seas of Athas was caused deliberately, by one halfling, for completely selfish reasons? THAT would probably draw the attention of a Dark Power.

I just had an idea, instead of it always being at dusk timewise, how about there at two times of day: Dusk and Nightwall. Dusk is all day long (think early evening during Daylight Savings Time) while Nightwall can happen any time and can last from an hour to several days. During Nightwall you can only see with darkvision and torchlight, light spell or any kind of illumination gives illumination of only 2o feet. Also during Nightwall all undead monster become "super powered" like increasing their CR by +2 or more and gaining more abilities like detect living within 60 feet. Stuff like that. What do you think?

Rajaat is the obvious one for this. He wanted to kill / exterminate EVERY SINGLE SENTIENT person on the planet except for the halflings. And to do it he created war and genacide that leveled the planet.

That is evil.

Well I have had a few ideas for a few races in this setting, which I am calling Obsidian Twilight, that will give it a Ravenloft/Dark Sun mixed feeling. Here we go:

Half Caliban: Obsidian Twilight version of Half Orcs based off of the Caliban from Monster of NeoExodus: Caliban.

Harrowed: Think Blade of the Blade movies. Partyly Undead/Human Hybrid.

Half-Giant: Per the SRD

Dromite: Per the SRD

I would like to have a total of 6 new/revamped races for this setting on top of the standard fantasy SRD races, but this kind of gives you an idea where I am looking to go with it.

3e / OGL If I combine the Dark Sun and Ravenloft settings, I get...

Depressed. :-S As in both settings are full of despair, to me. I like aspects of either one (moreso Ravenloft), but combining the two would really bring me down.

In one of my 2e ravenloft games one of the PCs made a Dark Sun gladiator as a replacement PC. I ran a solo for him being sent off to kill an evil defiler with other slaves and being the last survivor and going unconscious at the end of the battle unknowingly carrying the necromancer's possessing spirit. He woke up in the Egyptian Har akir desert setting as I was running the rest of the group through Touch of Evil. He roleplayed well being freaked out by the presence of the obviously rich and noble stranded Vistani (as he explained to his uncomprehending companions, they had metal pots hanging on their wagons) and his utter despair when someone mentioned there might be halflings nearby "We might as well throw down our weapons now and prepare for our throats to be slit, we'll never see them coming and we don't stand a chance against the cannibals even if we did see them. Oh well it was a good life." Having other players who knew nothing about Dark Sun made for a fun group dynamic.
