compleat strategist is truly the best store to visit. i daresay, it may be the best gaming store in the world. has anyone seen one that is overall better?

I havent been there but I know about 2-3 people who swear by THE SOURCE in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

I've worked around the corner from the Strat for the past 10 years and stop in there at least twice a week to chat up Larry (who works there). That being said the Strat is not my ideal gaming store, it's crowded and cramped. The actual gaming area is in the basement and seems almost like an afterthought.

It's a great store when it comes to being able to get stuff though, if they dont have it on the shelf (and they have ALOT of stuff on the shelves), the staff will sure enough order it for you.

Neutral Ground's new location has almost nothing in terms of RPGs, so I wouldn't make a special visit there if I only had time for one. Definitely stop by Compleat Strategist (which is on the same block as my company's NY office - makes it handy for quick stops!). I didn't know you work there, Truth Seeker - that definitely raises my opinion of the staff there! :)

Games Plus in Chicagoland is better - cleaner, more spacious, nice staff. CS is a strong second, IMO, and I'm glad it's available to me.

Yikes! Talk about your free advertising for this "The Compleat Strategist"! I've never even been to New York (state), and already I wanna check this place out! I'm a game-shop browser, hardcore.

For RPG's, I agree. I live in the Seattle metro area (where WOTC and Paizo are located) and I've lived in London (where Forbidden Planet started). Ork's Nest (in London, off Seven Dials) is darn good, but Compleat Strategist is significantly better. And I don't know anybody in Seattle that's . . . well, as Compleat!

I'm sure there are other good game stores in places I haven't been. I've heard New Jersey has a super one, but I don't remember the name. Connecticut's got nothing interesting, so far as I know from going up next door.

Oddly enough, when I lived in Wisconsin, the home of the original TSR, there were just a few comics places with a few current games -- nothing exciting that I knew of.

Gamer's Realm in West Windsor, outside of Princeton is excellent: http://www.gamersrealm.com/

For those in the know, how's the NYC CS compare to the Philly one? I haven't visited either in years, but will be back in South Jersey in December to visit my family over the holidays, and it's likely that we'll make a trip up to NYC to see some shows while we're in town.

It's a pretty legendary store, dating back at least to the late 70s -- and you can still find games there that have been on the shelves since that time!

There used to be several CSs around the country (I remember in the early 80s, going to the South FLorida one.). I think the one in Boston is still open, but the NY location is still the capital.

Wait, wait...I don't work there, I game there, for 3 of the 4 Saturdays in a month.;)

Second, they can't afford me.

Me hope that does not diminish your 'hope' of the staff.:heh:

Haven't been to the Philly location; sorry! (Nor to their DC store.) I'll probably stop by there in January when I'm next down there.

I went to Boston in '86 or '87 to look at colleges, and I talked my parents into dropping my off at the Boston store for a half-hour. I was very excited to be able to visit a real game store, after years of reading their ads in Dragon! It did not disappoint - if memory serves, I got my 1e OA there, as well as some Star Trek RPG books. (Funny how I can remember that all these years later.) I went back a few years ago, and was saddened to see they'd cut their floorspace in half. Still had a decent selection of newer items, though.

Thanks for the clarification; my misapprehension. Their loss for not having cool guys like you on staff. :) I think it's funny that we only ever see each other at GenCon, even though we're both in the NY area. We should try to have an NY Gameday in Manhattan one of these days.
