Gaming Cons Have Changed (I'm Old)

Paying for both the ticket and the games is not that common ime and one of the oddities of gameholecon. Glad to hear you had a good time. I have only attended cons in the past few years but have not yet encountered CPM.
I find it weird that it's thought of an oddity considering GenCon had been doing it when I started going to conventions back in 1983. I mean if the Big Daddy of RPG-industry conventions does it, how odd can it be?

Most of the time, you're better off going off site to get food. Checking out new venues can be an adventure in it's own right!
Yeah. Poor me didn't have an automobile. My wife dropped me off at the con in the morning and I walked back to the hotel late at night. I brought my trusty backpack with me which contained water and various snacks including homemade beef jerky.

I think the welcome lack of CPM or W at cons is most cons mention in the con docs that lack of personal hygiene can result in revocation of a con badge. I imagine that most CPMs reform or give up on cons after being booted a couple of times. Also, CPM can't hide behind the pall of smoke that used to be a frequent thing at early cons before smoking became unwelcome at most events.
Over the years I've noticed CPM has also disappeared from the local gaming scene (mostly). The last time I encountered CPM, it was actually two of them and they absolutely reeked of tobacco and marijuana. Had I been running the game they sat and I would have tried to find the most polite way of telling them to get lost. Their stench bowled me over and I would not have willingly sat next to them for 3-4 hours. I've also noticed a lack of butt crack man as well. I could be counted on to see many butt cracks at the game store but they all disappeared sometime after 2012 or so. It's not just con rules, I think gamers have changed.

They are starting to feel some growing pains, though. They spilled into a new building on site this year that's very echoey due to unpadded concrete and brick construction (it's used more for farm-oriented trade shows like the World Dairy Expo). And two rooms used for You Too Can Cthulhu-sponsored games were tucked way out of sight and hard to find in some back halls. But still my favorite convention.
Noise was a problem for me in the Mendota rooms and that new building as well. I only had one game in a big hall, Arkham Horror was in the same hall as Wardens of the March, and that was the only game I played where noise wasn't an issue. I had one last game scheduled in the other building Saturday night, but I just didn't feel like dealing with the noise and left early instead.

Nobody checked my tickets at Gamehole Con. I mentioned this, and one of the GMs said something like, "We don't really do that here. At Gen Con they're pretty fanatical about checking, but I won't check unless there's more bodies at the table than I expect."

I know folks who have been going to GHC for years. The hotel thing wasn’t a 1 hour glitch or bots. Some years ago a person found out if you change the year in the reservation link you could book at anytime. Meaning right now folks could be reserving for next year already if it hasn’t been fixed.

At first it wasn’t enough to notice but secrets like that are the worst kept kind. This year it exploded on the organizers as all rooms were gone at launch. This was also on the hotels not the organizers I hear.

I had to do the same ticket thing at Gencon this year. Maybe it's a big con thing.
Maybe I'm wrong that it's odd. I've not been to Gencon. I thought about GHC, but didn't for unrelated reasons, and I thought it was weird to charge for both. And some folks in the local area I talked to about it also said it was weird. That's why I have that perception.

What I find... interesting is if you know you are going to "sell out" of rooms at the con rate, why not have more rooms at that rate or not even have a rate at all if you want to maximize money?

You have a rate because the con represents a steady, reliable source of income and you don't want to kill the golden goose. If hotels or other accommodations are lacking, the con may very well decide to move elsewhere in the future either because their needs aren't being met.

Speaking of butt crack boys, I have noticed a decline myself. However, at last Adepticon I had a 6 hour game with a BCB. This fella had a massive cooler filled with drinks and snacks. He got annoyed with the table when we decided to do a 20 min lunch break and later a 10 min restroom break. He was in it to win it and wasnt going leave for nothing. I'd ask him if he was wearing a diaper to ensure maximum playing time, but I didnt need to because he was rockin the BCB.

...I saw a lot more openly LGBTQ individuals and allies then I could shake a stick at. (Security specifically asked me to stop shaking sticks at people.) There were gay people, trans people, non-binary people, and a Gaymer organization even had a little booth there. I kept meaning to stop by to say hi but never got around to it. I saw a lot of people wearing buttons with slogans like "Protect Trans Youth" or simply declaring their identity. I thought it was great LGBTQ people were able to enjoy themselves so openly here in 2025. I don't remember that being the norm in the late 1990s or early 2000s, though part of that might be because I was in Texas and Arkansas...

It's nice to read the organizers desire to have their event be a welcoming space. It doesn't surprise me that it being the US, folks got to be themselves for a few days with stuff they enjoy; there are enough challenges and difficulties every day at present.

I appreciated the time it took to write about your experience. I have been conventions, but not a gaming one; it's still on my list!
