No More Gargantuan?

I think the solution here is to errata out the Gargantuan size category out of standard 4e monsters.

Reasons:

1) D&D Icons didn't sell very well.
2) Gargantuan minis don't work very well on a battlemat unless you have a huge open space
3) Garguantuan and Colossal sizes categories were a 3e innovation
4) Gargantuan and Colossal sizes would be better suited as terrain than as monsters alone. If you plop down a gargantuan monster you are plopping down something size of a mansion or a small keep. As Kamikaze says, why shouldn't you have rules for moving around and over it?

Largely, if the dragons are only huge (really how big do they need to be) then Tiamat can be the size she was meant to be in the D&D cartoon and 1e. If one wants to make larger creatures, we can always do a special dungeon tile rather than a miniature. That would have the advantage of having special zones, attacks, movement and such on the dungeon tile itself, yet still have exterior attacks like a miniature.

Sure, some customers are out $30-$120 depending how much they spent on their minis, but you could always do a DDI supplement in which you describe the old iconic minis as Great Wyrms who are so primordial they are older than the gods or something. In the meantime, they still look great on your shelf.

I'll point out that KotS uses a gargantuan mini. I did the sensical thing and swapped in my gargantuan black dragon mini for the giant statue in the trap room.

I agree. They should use real life standards regarding sizes (say big dinosaurs for the biggest monsters). Anything bigger should be of a different nature that limits it somehow. Marine or robotic or whatever. And special rules is a very cool idea.
 



I'm not a fan of game design dictated by Plastic Logic.

But I'm not against new rules for things that are so big that it's hard to run a minis battle with them. "Push plastic around...roll...hit...damage...repeat" needs to be changed up a bit, I think, and dealing with titanic creatures is a good time to do it. :)

So if they do that, EVERYONE IS HAPPY!

The "dungeon tile" idea is interesting. But really, anything that gives me a dramatic setpiece combat with the toughest thing in town is something I'll be pretty happy about.

I'm already happy that they use the discorporation on Tiamat to make killing her an epic quest. I'd just hope to make her a truly epic (and different) combat experience, too. She should play less like a really tough terrasque. ;)

Have you seen the statblock? There's 6 of them. One for her, and one for each head, all of which fight on separate initiative counts. Looking closely, I can't really see how you could make her more of an epic, 5-headed dragon queen than she already is.

As for Shadow of the Colossus type battles, it would take either an overhaul of the system, or treating a monster like a dungeon. Each "encounter area" is part of either the monster or the fight, evolving as the fight progresses. It's doable, but frankly, the current way of killing her is much more D&D. She's not simple, tarrasque-like, or anything of the sort.

Make her combat the adventure rather than the endpoint.

Engage all of a PC's skills and resources, not just attacks and defenses.

Transform her into the battlefield itself.

Have each head be a level 35 solo. ;)

Give her an AC of "Infinite except at the Weak Spot."

I don't think D&D has ever done combats with immense creatures "right." Because they need (and deserve) to be done more like setpieces than like monsters, but D&D can't break out of its own mold of "MONSTERS NEED STATS."

It would be worth it.

She's like a terrasque in that you fight her the same way: roll to hit, damage, repeat. There should be more variety in this epic combat (there certainly is leading up to it!).

See, I'd rather crawl around a tarrasque than crawl around on Tiamat. Tiamat should be all about dodging heads, breath weapons, and claws.

Huge size for Tiamat works for me if the ancient dragons are huge sized too. Huge size Orcus and other demon lords also seems okay to me.

Once you are as big as a house (which huge size is) hand to hand combat is pretty much at the upper limits of absurd for setting both a cinematic scene and for realism. So a monster should be made gargantuan if you want to present a unique combat experience like you were suggesting.

As for "plastic logic", you are being a little too smug by half. There is nothing wrong with enjoying minis play, nor for WotC to cater to their audience that enjoys using minis, since we pump quite a bit of money into the coffers to support the whole show. If minis are a significant part of their revenue stream, of course they are going to use models to help them sell miniatures.
