I don't know how proud I should be about this...

I got arrested 2 days before a D&D session, I bought a pen and paper in prison, not having access to my notes, wrote an adventure between isolation, forced pat-downs, and "drug searches". I got released 11pm the night before my D&D session, walked back home (Took 6 hours) and went to bed. I STILL got to my session on time and ran a good adventure.

I had alot of flu in November and consigned myself to the house to avoid infecting other people (I can work from home for about a week without problems, depending upon teaching).

So to avoid missing my D&D game I used my gmail account to play by downloading googletalk and using the DMs webcam. It worked great, though you can only have one person googling in this way.

Skype sounds better but I haven't tried it yet.

makes me think, isn't all this skype stuff and linking in players all over the world to play together what DDI is supposed to be, at least in part?

in the mid-late 90's we tried to do this with a dialup modem and mic and speakers. didn't work so well, as we had the type of modem that only allowed one side to talk at a time (its been so long, i forget the modem term for that---half duplex?). the crappy shared whiteboard program we were using didnt work so well either. glad to see things have improved :)

Hi Joe!

Technology is pretty good nowadays but I still think face to face is best. I battlegrounds will be my preferred mapping system if I have to DM across the net though, with Skype as the voice chat system.

As for DDI, well, I have my fingers crossed but I am steeling myself for disappointment.

have they ever given a detailed description of exactly what you will be able to do with DDI other than play with friends long distance? i've seen the mockup video demo but we all know the mockup is to sell it, and often looks noting like what comes out. if there are other programs out there that do what DDI is supposed to do, why doesn't hasbro just license those programs?

Now I'm curious what you were arrested for. :p

I am no longer completely clear on what the design goals of DDI are now but maybe someone else can update us.

There are programmes out there that allow you to see a virtual game table but as I understood it the DDI;

1) will allow you to use the 3D dungeon designer and to play in the 3D dungeon over the net. No other virtual tabletop allows this.

2) has the benefit that there are no licensing issues so you can port stuff into the DDI much more easily; the problem with Fantasygrounds and Battleground is that the set-up time cost for the DM is considerable. For me the promise of DDI was that things like the encounters from Dungeon and some WoTC modules would come ready imported and this would be a dream. I am sure once you are used to Battlegrounds it is easy but at first it is very difficult.
