I own Puerto Rico and El Grande.
I've only played Puerto Rico a few times, but I have already decided that I don't like it. With no dice and no cards, theres ZERO random chance, and the order of play doesn't switch to accomodate. Therefore, the player who sits next to the player who makes the biggest mistake automatically wins.
Plus its a big set-up/clean-up game, without the pretty factor of a lot of other games.
El Grande used to be the second game of choice behind Settlers when I used to have a regular boardgame night. I've played it often enough to have some ideas, but yet not often enough to have ever seen a specific strategy have any payoff. It could be because I was always playing with the same people and we all learned the game at the same time and were evenly matched, or it could just mean that its the most balanced game I've ever played. I'm not sure.
