Pathfinder 1E Paizo Licenses

The point is, though, if someone does something we don't like we'll let them know in a nice and gentle way once it's brought to our attention. If they don't comply, THAT'S when we send out our jackbooted thugs.

That's it! I was going to stick with 4E for a while now I'm gonna run a p0rn Pathfinder campaign with silly nymphs and perverted fomorians!!! Send your thugs!!! :p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

If the above it is true, then the DDI is indeed a failure

DDI is a service not a product.

So, when is the Pathfinder SRD coming out so I can release their rules on a wbesite by cutting and pasting? You say like all OGL companies they don't release THEIR rules on SRD? shocking

If the above it is true, then the DDI is indeed a failure or Paizo are selling a lot more adventures than I thought. Interesting though, since the companies do not share figures (I assume), how does one know who sells the most? Short of someone leaking confidential information.

I wouldn't consider DDI a "product", but my definition of "product" means a physical object. DDI is an online service, IMO.

On the point of sales and how much people in the industry know about it, Matt Sprang from Mongoose says in his book "I am Mongoose, so can you" about making a living from the RPG industry, that anyone can calculate very accurately how a particular product of a competitor's is doing if they know what information to look for. He calls it the "shadow side of the industry" and says it is very simple, though he doesn't elaborate on exactly how it works.

So the idea that Paizo and WoTC don't have hard figures on each other is apparently rubbish; Matt Sprang certainly seems to be claiming to.

It says it's the "best selling monthly product." If you don't consider DDI to be "monthly" per se (since I think it updates sporadically every few days) then it might not even be a competitor in this sense.

And the whole "service" versus "product" thing too.

OMG! They can change this at any time, or even cancel it! Let's all freak out about this completly standard contract clause and run around like headless chickens for awhile like we did about the same clause in the GSL...

I do think it's interesting, almost ironic, that James said specifically the "adult content" clause in the GSL was a big sticking point for them, but there is the same clause in their own license. Apparently, if they weren't already Paizo, they couldn't themselves get a license to publish Pathfinder material :)

Differences:
Publishing after Termination
GSL: Once the license terminates, you cannot continue to publish with 4E rules.
PFRPGCL: (Dang, that's long) Once the license terminates, you can continue to publish under the OGL.

Incorporation of Monster Stats
GSL: It is still unclear if you can have the stats of a MM published monster in a product
PFRPGCL: You can have stats of a PFRPGB monster in a product

Changing the License
GSL: If the GSL changes, you must make your products fit the license.
PFRPGCL: If this license (I'm not retyping those letters) changes, your back stock and reprints of back stock do not need to be updated to the new license.

Adult Content
GSL: That currently means nothing that would qualify as NC-17 rated movies but that may change depending on what the larger corporation's whims (or public opinion, or the political landscape or, religious activists with a bug up their butt, or ...) might be someday.
PFRPGCL: Paizo pretty much defines it as nothing that would qualify as NC-17 rated movies, and they are not owned by a larger corporation, do not make products that regularly appear in Walmart, are small enough to be completely ignored by national politics, and the religious right largely never heard of them.

On that last point, let me just state that I am a Christian and am not slamming Christianity, merely pointing out the reality of some in my religion and how it may impact the license.

Logo
GSL: You get "Dungeons and Dragons" on the back cover of your product, a name that's been around for over 30 years and is widely recognized.
PFRPGCL: Pathfinder as a brand has been around for nearly 2 years. Its a very strong up and coming brand name, but ... it's not "Dungeons and Dragons" (yet).

The only "shocking" thing in this whole post is how far from right you are and the fact that you decided to make a snide comment without researching you're facts... way to go!

P.S. You won't even have to cut n paste it since Paizo is planning to set up an online tool to access it.

Makes a lot of sense. Thanks for clarifying that.

Overall the license looks great and I wish Paizo and whoever chooses to support them a lot of luck and good sales.

Cheers
